Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a year ago. For many years I have also suffered from IBS. So, I am finding it rather difficult to juggle the different dietary requirements for both of these conditions. I am currently awaiting an appointment with a nutritionist but I thought I'd ask for advise/experiences from other people while I'm waiting. Many thanks, Rob

Hi Robeast, welcome to the forum🙂

I hope your appointment is with a dietician and not a ‘nutritionist’. It’s not too difficult juggling the two conditions, it’s just the addition of a further control. Up to now, you’ve eaten stuff that doesn’t trouble the IBS. I don’t know what that might consist of, I just know what troubles my ulcerative colitis.

Then you just tweak that to reduce carbohydrates - bread, pasta, spuds, all the stuff you should have been told to avoid or reduce as a T2. I have to avoid high fibre stuff.

Hi, thanks for your response. And, yes, I did mean dietician! I had the IBS under control until I was diagnosed T2. I changed my diet and then it resurfaced, aggravated by the T2 medication. My carb intake is minimal now and I'm considering giving it up altogether if that's possible. Anyway, it's early days yet, I will continue to read on and research the subject.

well l was very luck ? In that being diagnosed with d- type 2 and therefore cutting out nearly all carbs my ibs has almost gone.
Gain some loose some as they say!

From my experience, no two peoples IBS seems to be the same!

Yes, Metformin is known to cause some tummy troubles. Usually the metformin affect is transitory, but the slow release version is much friendlier (although some can't tolerate that either).

For what it's worth, my wifes IBS is triggered by fatty foods and nuts (amongst other things). So my current diet would be a nightmare for her. Although, chocolate brownies don't trigger her IBS but would be a issue for me 😉😛
