Hi was diagnosed type2 almost 2 years ago was put on metaformin which caused terrible tummy cramps then put on slow release which has been fine numbers were still going up so put on gliclazide, bloods recently checked and numbers came down a little to 74 was originally 58 then shot up to which I was shocked as I’d also lost 10lb in weight and was being realy good I also have high bp which I’ve had for several years and being controlled with medication I’m 55 years old used to be 7 stone now 12 stone never thought I’d be in this situation as I was always on the slim side untill I reached my 40s don’t know what more I can do to get my suger levels down.

Have you been given any dietary advice?

Carbohydrates in general cause high sugars and not just sugars alone. The standard advice to eat plenty of potatoes, bread, etc and avoid fats and sugar is not all that useful.

Hi Hunter62. Without changing your diet, your blood sugars will not come down. As Mark T says, you need to cut back on all carbs as these raise blood sugar. I'm assuming you don't test either. Getting a meter & testing is the only way to know what foods affect you and which are OK to eat. Test before & 2 hours after food.

Hi yes I went went to see someone at the hospital and she told me to eat several carbs a day because of eating any sugar! Which for me is impossible I was having weetabix in the morning with skimmed milk which I changed to semi (less sugar)salad for lunch, jacket potatoes with veg for evening meal etc I do eat one orange a day when I went on the new tablets I was getting the shakes and a lil light headed but this has passed I forgot to mention I have a fatty liver(not drink related I’m almost tea total)

Hello Hunter, welcome to the forum.
How did you come to be diagnosed.

Could you give us an idea of a typical days meals, snacks and drinks that we could cast our eyes over and offer advise on any changes, you see some things that are considered healthy by most people are not that good for us, fruit is one of them , some fripuits are high in fructose, though it’s a natural sugar it’s still sugar which our body can turn into glucose rapidly, with Carbohydrates esp , potatoes rice, pasta and bread our body dies the same.

So if you have been following the usual dietary advise that is usually given out to us by the nhs, it used to be called the ‘eatwell plate’ , then this might be the cause of your problem., it’s slso possible you haven’t been given any dietary advise.

Hmmmm seems I wa right about the nhs dietary advise given out to you

Our problem is carbohydrates especially the fast acting ones.
Potatoes esp mashed, some can tolerate a couple of new potatoes
Rice.
Pasta.
Bread esp white. Some people here have Burgen bread, Lidle protein rolls a few can tolerate wholemeal bread.
Some veg that grows below ground is high in carbohydrates.

We usually have no problems with protein or good fats

This is probably going to sound strange to you, but take my word for it. Try not to worry about the sugar content of foods it’s a simple carbohydrate, which in the uk is already included in the carbohydrate content on the back of the package or can.

Another plus with a low carb diet is. Many of us lose weight on it easily.

me again lol.
We have a good thread on here called, Useful links for people new to diabetes. for future reference it at the top of the newbies forum.

Sharp intake of breath here - what dreadful advice - weetabix is high carb - turns straight to sugar when digested - potatoes - likewise high carb - orange - full of sugar, which is where the fatty liver problems start - fructose, from fruit, is typically turned straight into fat by the liver.
As a type two diabetic - if you are lucky - eating meals with low carb foods, plus whatever you like in the way of meat or fish - or shellfish, eggs, cheese, and avoiding bread, potatoes, rice or floury foods should cause your blood glucose and then your weight to drop. The changes will have to be made slowly or the gliclazide will cause your BG to drop lower than advisable. You might have to reduce it in order to cope with the new lower levels.

Welcome Hunter.... I know it can be a little disheartening not to be getting the results you want. However, with a little help you should get there, by a little help I mean the many, many centuries of experience we have (collectively)....

One think that really helps me is to cut or reduce carb sources such as Bread, pasta, rice, cereals & starchy vegetables, instead replacing them with green leafy vegetables.

Hi, @Hunter62
I limit my carbohydrates, and try to avoid the ones where it's simple carbohydrates/sugars. I avoid most fruits, but will have about 2 tablespoons of Blueberries each morning.
I eat a lot of vegetables with my mid-day dinner and have a small late supper, generally, of raw veg like celery or cucumbers with hummus or sometimes egg mayonnaise. (Yes! I poke the egg mayo in the channel of the celery sticks: it's lovely!)
I also recommend Gretchen Becker's book. My husband and I used it throughout the first year. We both found it completely informative in an every day kind of way.
