Hi I am a type 2 diabetic on mixed insulin and pills. About to go on a single insulin plus insulin when I eat. Not skilled in counting carbs. Does anyone have experience on this matter?

Welcome @Marble13 🙂 It sounds like you’re moving to a basal/bolus regime (bolus being your mealtime insulin). You should find this more flexible than the mixed insulin, so although it’s extra injections the pay-off should be worth it.

It’s possible you might be given fixed doses for your mealtime (bolus) insulin to start with. If that’s the case, you would need to keep similar amounts of carbs in your meals to ‘fit’ the fixed dose of mealtime insulin you’re taking. Your nurse might suggest a carb level.

Some people use Carbs and Cals to help them estimate carbs. I just use the packets and boxes and Google, along with my memory as I’ve been counting carbs a very long time.

There’s a recent thread that might help you, with some useful posts and links:

Do you know what insulins you’ll be taking?

I have a couple of electronic weighing scales which can be put back to zero during a series of weighings, so I can see just how much meat or stirfry or mashed swede or cauliflower I am adding to the plate down to the last gram.
Being a scientist and engineer I can do estimates, but have an inner longing for precision which makes me an absolute pain once in a while.
The weighing scales are not expensive, and they make knowing the amount of carbs in a meal very easy.
You might have to balance a dinner plate on a mug, jug or bowl to be able to see the numbers, or get glass plates.
