Right guys, you all know my struggles with food, I'm feeling a bit stronger now and hoping in the very near future to eat a chocolate bar (along the lines of a kit kat peanut butter chunky, caramel freddo etc) anyways I am extremely nervous that as I haven't had anything like that for over a year now that I might not be able to stomach it and finish it, would you have a small bit first OR would you have a back up say such as extra bread with the same amount of carbs to hand? Sorry if you all think this is an absolutely ridiculous post! 😳 xx

Kaylz. I'm not a type1 but have been on MDI since being diagnosed 13 years ago. It would be difficult to advise on you eating chocolate after so long without. perhaps as you say try a small piece and see how you feel. I'm to weak to take a small bit, my treat every night when I get into bed is 2 Tesco dark chocolate mint thins

Here's what I'd do. I'd work out how much insulin I needed for the whole thing, inject half of it and eat half the bar, then if I fancied the other half, I'd inject the rest of the dose of insulin and finish the bar. There's no rule that says you have to do the entire insulin dose in one go.
Other people will have their own take on it, which may be different, and will tell you what they'd do, and you can make up your mind which strategy would suit you best. Go for it!

Personally I'd take one bite without jabbing then decide if I like it and will eat the whole thing. If yes - then I'd jab. A few minutes delay in having a bolus is NOT life threatening Kaylz.

You could even do a combination of the two, have a bite first to see if you like it, if you do then maybe inject half and see if you get on OK with it. And then inject the other half after you finish the bar.

Just have a nibble of the kit kat without the extra insulin, if its not to your liking then nothing lost.

Cheers guys, I'm not quite ready just yet but I'm looking into what I think I might be able to eat 🙂 xx

I would probably not go for something milk chocolate as I find my tastes have changed and they usually disappoint because somehow the sweetness overcomes the chocolatiness. I’d go for a dark chocolate option such as dark chocolate biscuits or chocolate covered nuts- my favourite. Lidl also do some amazing chocolate covered strawberries, raspberries and sour cherries. I find it difficult to imagine not being able to finish a chocolate bar but if I did think that was possible I would go with what’s been suggested above.

I am probably the last person to hand out advice to people who have been living the life for years.. but anyway..
Perhaps eat your usual meal and have a small piece of your chocolate at the end and enjoy it. What works for me is a small (ish) piece of dark chocolate with a big cup of coffee.. the main point is enjoy it.

I have at least a square of 90% every night but I want a whole bar of something as I want to feel like I CAN do it when I want to and I CAN live 'normal' xx

I have tried those, quite interesting but didn’t quite hit the spot for me. Would be interested to hear what you think. I’m not that keen on chocolate with a runny centre and prefer nuts in my chocolate. They did have a nice tang to them though.

I think you are closer to that than you think.. already you are having a small bit of normality and you want to go for it, so go..
You got me thinking about sour cherry now..

I've always had at least a square a day, its not easy for me to just go ahead and do I need to build myself up a bit first xx

I get that.. I have been realising that I have been building up to some things while just going ahead with others, I don't know how T1 affects my thinking but a bit of rationality seems to have gone in the process!
Spent the last week living out of different hotels and eating in different places each evening, no choice but to pick a number on the novorapid and order to hopefully hit the right place, Can't say what normal means these days.. ! But it doesn't mean can't and never, more like let me think for a minute about if I need or want this and in what quantity..

You know all this!

D'you know after lunch yesterday I realised I came back out of the kitchen with our plates, sat down and ate it and thought, Oh I did enjoy that! and carried on with whatever conversation. Pete then went and made a drink and halfway down the cup he realised - I didn't! - Err, did you do your blood before lunch? Nope, nor did I even give a thought to having diabetes whatsoever.

It was pleasant, hence presumably why I thought I enjoyed it - but not a massive enough pleasure to make me want to do it deliberately, IYSWIM? It would then become a guilty pleasure if I did that, so in fact not pleasing at all!
