Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows how doctors diagnose whether you have Type 1 diabetes as opposed to Type 2 or visa versa.
Thanks 🙂

Usually they make a guess, and if the patient doesn't respond to treatment as they should, they make another guess. When symptoms are mixed sometimes further testing is done, but such things as age, weight and initial tests indicate clearly enough for a first guess to be correct.

It should be an educated guess though!

There is one type of D that usually presents initially as T2 and indeed also responds for a while (months or years) to T2 treatment but at some stage ONLY responds to insulin - LADA.

It’s mostly based on clinical factors - most simplistically age and weight can give an indication, but also speed of onset, family history, weight loss, presence or absence of ketones, or other indicators of ‘the metabolic syndrome’ etc...

There are also checks that can support the HCPs deliberations for trickier things like MODY eg GAD antibody testing and c-Peptide
