Hello all, just joined this evening.
East Midlands here 🙂

So few months ago i had a blood test, nurse called me in and informed me that my blood sugar level was really high (10.5) she informed me to lose weight, eat healthy and be more active. I took her advice and since

..have lost weight
..cut out most if not all the c**p i used to eat before
..been keeping active
..watching what i eat

and generally feeling much better, only to find out after I had another blood test 10 days ago that my level has gone up (15.2) and I have to go in and see the doctor urgently...

I am not sure what i have done wrong since July as i listened to what the nurse said..

Any ideas? !!!

Do you really mean you're type1? Because if so you should be taking insulin, diet and exercise alone will do nothing. Hope you meant type 2 !

The dr did mention insulin this morning but i havent been on any medication yet...

Hi Superk001, sorry to hear this news but welcome anyway....

You say you have modified your diet, what does it consist of now vs before?

Can you tell us a bit more about how you were diagnosed? What symptoms did you have, and who told you it was type 1?

Thanks for the welcome 🙂

Now...
Lots of water, fruit/vegetables, smaller portions for dinner

Before...
Lots of sugar, chocolates/biscuits, takeaways, binge eating throughout the day at work and at home...

Sorry forgot to say welcome! Sorry if I sound brief, typing on a phone... Was just a bit concerned about you writing that you are t1 but no mention of insulin. Often on here people are misdiagnosed as the wrong type for some time. Hope your next appt shines some light on it!

I was about 16 stone a few months ago, went to see the doctor about something else, he said i should have a blood test done, which I did, when the results came in (July 2016), i had to go in and see the nurse, she told me that my blood sugar level is 10.5 which is high and i need to do something about it...such as lose weight, be active and eat properly, which i did, she didnt put me on any medication then and said that if i can lose about 10 kilos and look after myself i should be okay after a couple of months..

Symptoms back then..

-dry mouth every morning
-sickly sweet taste in my mouth
-lots of visits to the toilet (esp at night)

One of the things that many members of this forum advocate is testing.... Usually for T2's this means self-funding a BG meter, the SD Codefree from Amazon is a favorite owing to the low cost of test strips.

Once you are testing you can determine what foods are adversely affecting your BG.

No Probs, its fine..
I have an appt on Friday morning with the doctor..ill know much more then and want to get to the bottom of this !!!!

It sounds like they assumed you were type 2 before, because of your age, weight, etc, but now you've been following advice and lost weight, cut out sugar/carb etc, and your levels have gone up (quite a lot) they are reconsidering, and think you might be Type 1.
Take a pencil and notebook to your appointment on Friday, there'll be a lot to take in. Ask the question, which type do you think I am, and why? If you are put on meds, either oral or insulin, ask about an exemption certificate, this will give you free prescriptions. If you are put on insulin, ask about informing the DVLA. Anything you're not sure about, come back here and shout, there normally someone who can answer your queries.

Thank you for the advice..
Yes I have a lot of questions to ask the doctor when i go see him/her on Friday

What I am trying to figure out is what have i done wrong within 3 months so that my levels have gone up so much? Id be stupid if I didnt pay any attention to what the nurse said back in July.
I am feeling really good with myself and alot of people who i work with and have met recently said im looking better than before and so much healthier...

It sounds like you have done all the right things, so don't worry about that. If Robin is right and they suspect you are actually type 1 then the glucose levels will not come down without insulin. Even if I ate nothing I would gave high BG without taking insulin! Has the horrible sickly taste gone since you changed your diet? Also, did the weight drop off really quickly? Not trying to put down your dieting efforts, but rapid weight loss and the horrible taste are both signs of T1, these are important things to discuss with your Dr on Friday. Just keep doing what you're doing til then. I know less about type 2 but if you definitely have that then there are a lot if people on here who can help with dietary advice
eg it's not just about eating healthily, some foods like muesli have a very high carb content and can still raise BG even if they have no added sugar.

Robin's questions are a very good list, I'd also suggest asking them to test for ketones- take a water sample with you. Please try not to worry and feel bad- if you need medication it's not your fault, and you'll feel loads better for it! Come back and ask lots of questions when you've had your appointment.

Yes that horrible sickly taste has gone since i have changed my diet..
Well its taken me 3 months to lose the weight, i actually though i've only lost a little bit of weight, but i weighed myself 10days about and im 13.2 stone gone down from 16stone which I was in July, i have been keeping active and doing lots of walking, some swimming but more importantly watching what i was eating within the last 3 months...I understand its not just about healthy eating as I do have the off naughty food now and then...

My intention was to NOT go onto medication as I have heard that early diabetes can be reveresed and a few relatives i know have done exactly that...

early diabetes can be reveresed
I think you have hit on a good point here.... Yes, reversed but not cured, we will be D for life, the mention of relatives sounds like D is in the family

Myself, I have generally good control, FBG in the 5.0 range & last A1c 36...... It's a case of how hard you want to work at it and it sounds like you do.

Oh yes, i want to work hard at it and i feel that I have achieved the goals that the nurse set me 3 months ago 🙂, I was over the moon when I got weighed , just wasnt expecting the dr to tell me my levels have shot up higher..

What sort of tests did you have. Was it blood taken from your arm (into a tube for later testing)? This would be a HbA1c.
Or did they prick your finger (testing the drop with a meter there and then)?

There are more than measuring system. And the two tests are measuring different things. Although all refer to BG.

There also could have been lack of comunication on the part of medical people, leaving you confused.

It's possible to get those results and be doing things right.

Make sure you know which test and what the results mean.

Blood taken from my arm for later testing, this was done on both occasions...
