Type 1 and Tech, 16 October 2021

Unfortunately I’ll be going to the Rovers so would have to leave half an hour before the end. If that isn’t a problem, I’d be happy to sign up.

Please can we feed back the request to make these more inclusive. As with the last one of these, and I’m sure i fed it back then, 3 of those 4 topics don’t sound specific to type 1 but are likely relevant to many. If they are insulin specific then that still includes type 3c, cf related diabetes, Lada and t2 on insulin as well as T1. Improving access to technologies is if anything even more relevant to other types of diabetes not just T1, so I don’t see why this type of education shouldn’t be open to those with other types of diabetes than just T1. If the answer is “anyone can attend”, then the title at least needs changing, as specifying type 1 feels exclusive and puts off those with other types of diabetes.

Thank you @Lucyr

I will certainly pass your feedback on.

My guess would be that while some of the topics may not be T1 specific, perhaps the suggestions would be framed in a T1 context? I completely agree though that it would be good to make these sessions as inclusive as possible - especially for anyone using MDI / intensive insulin therapy, but who may have a diagnosis other than T1.

I’m sure that would be fine Mike.

I can understand that some of the suggestions would be different eg “if you’re having difficulties with exercise you could ask for a pump” but this could be got round to make it more inclusive. Eg “if you’re T1/T3C/CF whatever is eligible and having these difficulties then you could ask about a pump, if you’re T2 then have a snack”. Eligibility for pumps/sensors/etc are about the only difference between the types for those on insulin and given some with T1 might not want or be able to access technology either, then just giving a tech and non tech solution to problems would make the sessions accessible to all on insulin

I am not disagreeing with you with regard to making this more inclusive but if the only difference is pumps and sensors, what else is there to discuss on a conference about diabetes technology?

Well if you look at the topics for the session they aren’t all technology focused:

- emotional health (presumably this can’t all be pump and sensor related)
- sports, exercise and pregnancy (pregnant women with T2 on MDI are eligible for libre in England)
- discussion around improving access to diabetes technology (currently T2 on MDI are less eligible than T1 so seems relevant)
- challenges and opportunities posed by the coronavirus pandemic (presumably Covid challenges arent all pump specific)

Remember also that Scottish T2 on MDI can be eligible for libre on NHS and so may be interested in learning more about technology. Same for those in England with learning disabilities. Finally remember all the T2 in England who self fund libre and would benefit from learning more but aren’t eligible to attend these.

Also, I’m not familiar with the eligibility rules for technology for T3C, LADA, CF Diabetes, MODY etc but they may fall into some similar situation of being eligible for diabetes technology funding, or paying for it themselves, but not eligible to attend these sessions as they aren’t T1.

There is nothing stopping people without Type 1 (even without diabetes) from registering if they are interested.
As the poster explains the conference is "about the latest in diabetes tech, how to access it and what’s on the horizon for diabetes tech"

The description specifically says that it is for T1s and doesn’t say people with other kinds of diabetes can attend.

Thanks for your interest in the conference everyone. I’ve heard back with the following:

The conference is open to everyone, and the content shouldbe relevant to those on intensive insulin treatment. The only caveats I would make are the following:
  • The tech and care pathways may be slightly different for those types you’ve mentioned, and sessions on the topic of access will be type 1-specific. I’ll check with our policy team to see if we can potentially include info about access to tech for other types of diabetes as supplementary information on the virtual platform.
  • All case studies/presenters are people with type 1 diabetes.
  • Reference throughout the conference will be specifically to type 1 (rather than those on intensive insulin therapy).
The content of the day will include:
  • Emotional and psychological impact of tech
  • Top tech tips
  • Apps
  • Tech and pregnancy
  • Sport, exercise and tech
  • Getting older with type 1 and using tech
  • Future plans for tech (incl. information about the NHS England closed loop pilot)

So yes, it is open to anyone using basal:bolus style MDI, but it looks like there is very much a T1 slant on things.

Hope that helps

Thee is some discussion on this already, here, for anyone who is interested and isn’t sure if they qualify.

I must admit I was in until the last page, requiring me to consent to being contacted for various purposes. Most were obviously optional and I'm fine with that. But the first one looked like it wasn't (it looked like it was part of the terms and conditions, but the purposes allowed for contacting me looked a bit too broad for me).

I'm not saying I think nobody ought to be comfortable with this. It's just that I'm not so I'll just wait until it's on YouTube and watch it then. Or perhaps just skim through last year's which I don't remember watching.

Type 1 and Tech, 16 October 2021

Any information on accessing Type 1 tech would be most welcome but I cannot attend. My 44th anniversary with this, still on MDI, little in the way of complications but sick to the back teeth of MDI and just observing what I'm missing. Not a priority in the eyes of my diabetes team. Psychologically its doing my head in.
