Well, 23 months - near enough!
So I know I'll get shot down for this, but I pretty much agree with my doc when he says "You've cured yr diabetes". By that, he & I both mean "metabolic syndrome" as well as BG.
HbA1c = 5.3% / 34. So up from the 4.6% / 27 in May last year, but that was always spurious-looking. Bang on median for non-diabetic males my age; a couple of ticks above the prediction cranked out by my patent-pending Diabetotron machine; but anyway just fine.
No Metformin for several months. Normalising BG largely due to weight loss, via adjusting calories in vs calories out, in line with an ocean of high-quality evidence. Carb moderaiton a secondary element for BG normalisation and not an independent factor in the weight loss.
Achieved my baby-hamster-LDL target of 0.7, down from 1.0. (Doc says that's the lowest he's seen). Max dose statin + reducing sat fats to <= 5% of calories. Exactly as predicted, a witness to the quality and consistency of the data for the effects of both of these moves.
As a bonus, HDL creeping up to 1.1 from 1.0 (it's so sticky!) and trigs down to 0.6 from 1.0.
I have significant atheroscelrosis/peripheral artery disease, and getting LDL as low as possible is super important for arresting progression, and maybe giving some basis for hoping for actual regression. My gammy leg with its occluded femoral artery remains gammy for the moment - really, my biggest health issue, while my eyes & retinopathy remain OK.
All electrolytes, liver function metrics and blood cell numbers in range. BP 117/70.
Why do I claim "cured"? Because unless I stack weight back on, I have no reason to believe that BG, BP, lipids will spiral out of control again. That counts as a "cure" in my book; YMMV!
