Hello everyone, newly diagnosed type 1, been advised to use Agave Nectar as a substitute for honey as its very low GI and a good substitute for sugar (every little helps) - has anyone used this stuff and can it help regulate your BS levels?:confused

Hi Turtle, welcome to the forum 🙂 Haven't tried it myself, but anything low GI is good to help prevent blood sugar spikes - I think there are a few members here who use it. How are things going? What insulin regime are you on? Hopefully, you will be able to go on a carb counting course so that you will be able to adjust your insulin to match your carb intake. I'd recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas so you can get to grips with Type 1 in all its wonderful complexity 🙂

Please feel free to ask anything that might be puzzling you and we'll try our best to help! 🙂

p.s. I moved your post to the Newbies section so more people would see it 🙂

wow that was quick!!!

Many thanks, trying to get to grips with the whole things, levels up and down, going on a REACCT course next month, which hopefully will increase my knowledge, I'm on a Bolus, Basal regime which is working quite well but need to match carbs to insulin more effectively - watch this space!!!!

Welcome Turtle.

Good news that you're on basal bolus and going on a REACCT course. Personally I prefer honey to cactus juice - and it's much cheaper for me, as a beekeeper friend gives me a jar a year, usually in exchange for helping on a canoe marathon. All depends how much sweetness you want, really - if not much, then sugar / honey is OK, if more, then might have to consider artificial sweeteners. However, a sweet tooth does diminish if you gradually eat fewer sweet things.
