It depends what you refer to as a Turnip, I am originally from the North East and what I would call a Turnip here in the south would be called a Swede and the Scots would call a Neep!
If you mean the small white ones , they are usually a winter vegetable too!
To me, a swede tends to be larger, and has yellowish flesh. I would say they taste a little sweeter. A turnip can be any size, and is usually whitish in colour, often with a purple tinge around its neck. They can be a little hot in taste.
But either can be used for a gratin, as they are just 2 different types of root veg.
