Since I had my last review, Hba1c 6.2% and cholesterol LDL 4 AND HDL 1.8.

He questioned my dosage of Metformin and reduced this to 1 x 500mg per day. Since the reduced dose my stomach has been playing up, in that I suffer from upper stomach ache which is associated with too much gas. I am forever burping which makes me feel a bit sick.

I know I have been suffering from stress recently as we just moved house a month ago and I have some working on some pretty stressful jobs *from home.

I was wondering if anyone had encountered stomach problems when their Met dosage had been decreased? I used to take 1 x 500mg in the morning with breakfast and the the other with my evening meal. Now I just take 1 x 500mg with my evening meal. I wake up with this feeling of bloatedness and constantly burp. Maybe it's the time of day I'm taking the dose? Or could it be my system getting used to the effects of 500mg instead of 1000mg?

Sorry about the questions, but I'm at a loss as to what to do. I have also wondered if the different brand of Metformin has had any impact? The name on the box is Pfizer.

It might be your system getting used to the new regime. Do you take your tablet with food or after meals? If you take it on its own with nothing in your stomach it increases the effects. I find it makes me have more downward gas.

Hi Caroline,

I try to remember to have it with my evening meal, but invariably, I sometimes forget and take it after. I have heard and endured horrible side effects when I first went on Metformin. I started off the first week with 1 x 500mg and went onto a double doze the week after. I had weeks and weeks of stomach upset and was determined to conquer the demon, which I did! However, I haven't heard of people having tummy troubles when the dose is reduced, but surely, the body would have to readjust itself to the lesser dose? It certainly feels like the symptoms I first had with Metformin, bloating, gas, sickly feeling, tummy rumbling, etc. etc.

Donna 🙂

If the tummy problems are too much of a problem see your doctor and keep a food diary. I have assumed it is the metformin, but it might be something else. It took us ages when hubby started having problems to work out he has a dairy intolerance.

Is there a different brand-name on the box? I have heard peeps say they have different results with one brand, thought it began with a D or a B .....
