Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Afternoon. I have been told that my triglyceride level is too high (2.8) I am awaiting another blood test in a few weeks. Can someone explain...in simple terms what this means. Everything I have googled is as clear as mud. I am type 2 diabetic on Simvastatin and Metformin if that has any bearing on it. Many thanks

Your total cholesterol is made up of basically 3 components - HDL, LDL and Trigs. All 3 need to be 'in balance' with each other (cos we need all of em, all LDL isn't 'bad') for it to be considered healthy. They can measure LDL but they normally don't cos it's very difficult - so it's normally calculated from the actually measured results of the other two things.

I think the 'normal' Trigs level is sposed to be c.1.6 - but I don't actually know what it means if it's way out from that, sorry.

Do you know the total, or either of the other two things?

high trigs are caused from carbs, it also means that there is high sdLDL and is a marker for fatty liver.

I think the best way to reduce trigs/TG is to go low carb and higher fats, There is no drug that can duplicate this that I know of.

Ty both....no trophywench, I do not know any other figures...this was picked up from another blood test for a different condition..they have referred me back to my GP for a follow up blood test in July.
I am following Slimming World plan Bilbie, the plan does encourage pasta/rice/potatoes....so should I be cutting down these foods ? So far have lost 2 stone but have at least another 5stone to loose...I will
look at the video when on computer later ty 🙂

Do you have a blood test meter? a lot of diabetics can't handle starches and sugars including fruit/juice
.
Losing weight can throw your cholesterol out too.

This gives a simple overview to how it works for me. The more carbs I eat the more carbs I want. They don’t give up easy and it’s biochemical

what to expect the first week, besides being starving hungry for the first 36 hours, then it stops

Testing is a total education! You will likely be shocked at your numbers reaction to the foods that the nutritionists are recommending that we eat...

So Very true

I don't test at home because I was told not to by the diabetic nurse. I was diagnosed just over 3 years ago and have managed fine up to this last
blood test. Do you think it worthwhile me getting a home kit...presumably it would help me to work out which foods my body reacts badly too ? Feeling
hacked off as I'm doing well on the SW eating plan and finally losing weight...if I have to cut back on all my carbs I will struggle to stick to it... thank you all for your advice, much appreciated. 🙂

testing and SD codefree meter, this has the cheapest strips

low carb is more successful at losing weight and yes you will be hungry if you don't replace the lost carb and why a lot do LCHF
“Dr Eric C. Westman, MD and president elect of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians, has 15 years of experience helping patients lose weight and improve their health using low carb. He has also helped do several high-quality scientific studies on low carb.”

I have not cut carbs out the last few years but I have cut them down and reduced my potion sizes! I have learnt you have to find what foods work for you and adopt eating habits that also work for you , and you can manage long term! I like many on here manage to work out what those foods are by using a meter!
Over 2 years ago my BMI was over 30, it has been under 30 for over a year, and at present it is just under 27!
