Treating a Hypo

Must admit to never using coke or any other fizzy drink due to the resulting tooth rot from all the acid in them 😱

Yet funny enough lucozade sport just 1 mouthfull is enough to treat a hypo for me.
Please no comments about a big mouth 🙂

Hahaha very funny. However wow that is amazing. That is not a lot at all.

We use straws in the coke, especially in the night. Pop in the straw and my daughter just drinks it asleep. The straw should bypass most of the teeth and just go down, that's the theory anyway.

My philosophy is I would rather save the brain than the teeth (apart from the fact that nothing else works anyway !)

:D We have a pile of straws next to the coke too ! Trying to sit up when you test at 1.8 isn't a good idea. Far better to slurp and face the resulting huge burp 10 minutes later 😱

In Ragnar Hanas's book he mentions about the stomach not emptying quickly enough to get glucose into the small intestine, so drink some lemonade to force the stomach sphincter to open. THere's no doubt that liquid gets through faster. I was told early on that the mouth and tongue absorb glucose direct to bloodstream but in the book it says not. I can't find any info confirming this either way.

I think it could be said I mastered diabetes and sort of now gained my Masters?.

Can?t see that all of a sudden jelly babies stopped working, either a basal or bolus problem seem to be better candidates..

As no patterns to the hypo?s (would have picked that up) and pretty sure that basal is pretty good, but always worth a double check though? Leaves the bolus but here last night could have been a carb miscalculation (it was a guestamate) but not totally convinced..

As to straws, don?t get many hypo?s and it?s a rare occasion that I hit a low 3mmol/l, 3 jelly babies generally take me back up into 6ish mmol/l probably a tad too much but 15g is partly old habits and a lot of restraint not to munch the whole pack of jelly babies?. So tempting hehe

Fair enough, just a suggestion as I know it happens a lot, perhaps not with you though

You did ask for ideas Ellie ! :D

Still think the coke mini cans are by far the best thing to have for a quick upper. Jelly babies are good for out and about to top up and treat a minor hypo but fizzy liquid gets in there quick.

But, as has been said, we're all different !🙂

Hi Ellie,

I doubt whether anyone will ever know everything about diabetes - it is such a difficult condition to cope with - so I personally take the view that things will change periodically, and we have to change/adapt and learn to keep up to date with the latest research as it is required. I do think that technology with take off over the next ten years or so and the younger generation of diabetics will have some of the best tools at their fingertips - hopefully before Alex goes to Uni - he he.🙂Bev

Absolutely and utterly agree with this

Absolutely agree with this as well.

I think there are quite a few who have mastered diabetes and quite a few who have gained their masters on it as well 🙂

If there is a pattern and its happening at the same time of day when the hypo is.

Otherwise it could just be the beast that is diabetes raising its head. Things change.

Sorry Sue but have to disagree with the more than 10 carbs then its a basal. Some people need more than 10 carbs.

There is the 15 rule ie 15 cho, wait 15 mins and test etc.

However once people have mastered diabetes then of course you can play around the hypo treatments.

If my daughter is high 3's then half a small can of coke or 2/3 of one is ok, depends whether I know why the hypo has occured. Anything under that and she needs a full 15 cho of quick acting. Anything under about 2.5 and she needs double that so two cans straight off normally.

Sorry, hate disagreeing with people 😛

Just reading through this thread out of curiousity, can you tell me what 'cho' is? beng new, some of these terms are a bit foreign.

Sorry Susie, cho just means carbohydrates, simple as that. Do ask though, it is the only way I learnt and some of these terms baffled us all at some point or other. 🙂

I have to say that for a year we used fresh orange juice for Ben - I knew it wasn't ideal but hard to get him to eat when sleeping and wouldn't take anything fizzy (even when asleep!) but it worked brilliantly with 10g bringing him up within 5 mins easily. All of a sudden though it stopped working and it was taking 20g and 20 mins to get him to come up. We now use jelly babies and for now they work a treat so yeah something stopped working for him that had worked previously.
The other thing to consider is are you having more hypos - would this mean the liver's reserve is lower and so makes hypos harder to treat - just a thought - I'm sure someone with more experience could clarify one way or another.

No these are over several weeks, so plenty of time to recover from the previous one.. I think this is what through thrown me...

Never tried fruit juice, but have got a coke can on standby to see if it makes any difference, just hope I can stomach it, I don't drink fizzy that often but I can tell when somebody given me full fat coke.. As the sweetness makes me want to throw up... hehe this could be very interesting experiment

I've got a couple of busy days, so can't do any fasting tests until the end of the week to shed any further light on it..

I'm not keen on fizzy either. I've got some lucozade by my bed that I loosened the top on so it would go flat - it still has the same sugar in it 🙂

Shudders

I think I will stick to the sour sweets or foamy bananas :D

Oh, i so loathe Lucozade, i did even as a child, YUK! Fizzy also makes me feel ill while hypo. And also makes me go too high... so yes, we are all so different! It's fascinating.

Over the years I too have found I need more to bring me round.

Haha! It;s been there for two years - I also have jelly babies by the bed 🙂 I got the lucozade because I had a really bad hypo from my lantus one night (yes, I know!) and the JB's didn't seem to be working very quickly - went out the following day to get some so I would be prepared if it happened again, and it hasn't!

Has it got a use by date on it? I suspect if you have broken the seal it wont be so good now.

I hate jelly babies :D Fruit pastles and you talking :D

Jelly babies taste too concentratedly sweet to me too...
