Hi to all the other newbies and the pro's who share their experience
I was diagnosed type 2 a week ago and by trawling these posts I have already discovered that Burgen bread has 11.8g carb per slice as opposed to the 18.2g per slice of Warburtons seeded which I have eaten for years. (I feel a toast and marmite feast coming on!) I have also discovered low carb Baileys for Christmas and can hardly contain my excitement. I have been educated that fat isn't bad. I think I'm going to like it here 🙂

Hi Jackie, yes - make sure you get the Soya and Linseed version of Burgen as there are other varieties that have higher carbs. It's the fact that some soya flour is used in the bread rather than ordinary flour which means it is lower carb. It's also really nice bread - my favourite! 🙂

I've had it before and like it but I always resorted to the softness of Warburtons for sandwiches. Will defnitely be buying it from now on though. I have only noticed the soya and linseed so didn't know there were others, thanks for the warning as I am likely to buy others if I saw something different for a change.

I've found another good thing about Burgen is that it doesn't dry out like alternatives such as Warburton's or Hovis seem to do, plus it freezes well 🙂 I think there is a Poppyseed version, although the S&L is the most popular, so the one you are most likely to see 🙂

Hovis have also just released a 'low carb' bread - comes in all sorts of varieties too 🙂

In Wheat Belly it says rather than eat white bread just spoon sugar from the bowl! 😱 I luvs a soft Warburtons ::cries::

It's true! White bread has a higher glycaemic index than table sugar 😱 It's because there is one fewer process that it has to go through for the carbs (refined starch versus sucrose) to convert to glucose and raise blood glucose levels 😱 Most bread on supermarket shelves, both white, 'best of both' and allegedly 'brown' is like this :( We need more Burgen-type breads - they should be outnumbering the rubbish, but this hardly ever gets a mention when people discuss 'healthy' eating :(

I wasn’t keen personally on the Burgen but the Hovis lower carb bread do white, wholemeal and seeded. I love the latter and it’s only 9.9g carbs per slice. I know they’re all smaller slices but a couple of slices, lightly toasted for brekkie does me fine.
