Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello,
I'm going to be travelling abroad next month to Germany, so thankfully just a flight of a couple of hours. But what i am wondering.......and this may sound daft.........but should i wear the special socks in case of DVT? The last time i flew was long before i was diagnosed with diabetes. But someone asked me the other day and i just wasn't sure. I have type 2, so don't need insulin, i try and keep things in control with diet and exercise.
Any advice welcome!

thank you,
Katie

Hi Katie. For a 2 hour flight, I wouldn't bother. I've flown to Bulgaria & Crete, which are both longer flights & didn't bother with flight socks.

Longer haul than Crete etc only for me in the past too, though now I have intermittent claudication, I probably would on short haul too TBH.

I heard a report recently that it's not the sitting still on a long haul flight that can lead to DVT, but it's due to the cabin pressure.

I wouldn't be worried at all, I survived a non-stop flight LAX to Auckland; however, if there is a history, then seek medical advice.

I always wear the on any flight outside of the UK.
Put them on around 1 hour before I go to the airport and leave them on for a couple of hours after I arrive at my destinatiion.
I have a couple of friends, 3 actually, who developed DVT albeit granted on long haul, and it was very serious for them.
I adopt the philososphy better safe than sorry.
