I've got a trapped nerve in my neck - I think I slept awkwardly the other night. I've applied ibuprofen gel but it hasn't made any difference - anyone else had this, and what did you do that helped?

Hi I have had a trapped nerve in the top of my right leg and one in my back. As the name says it's trapped and it will eventually go, but needs to be realised first, but when ? :( My worse one was the top of the leg, the pain was unbearable sometimes ( this was a few years ago) I used a heat cream and painkillers, the one in my back still plays up from time to time. It's just one of those of things I'm afraid, hope it doesn't get too painful, if it does, then have a chat with your Doctor. Sheena

I hope it's not too painfull for you. Some people find gentle exercises help release the nerve, or plenty of warm baths and showers.

Or a heat pad/hot water bottle?

If I remember rightly, I kept trying to stretch it as far as the pain would allow along with the usual ibuprofen and heat. It will eventually loosen up enough for you to manipulate it and the bruised feeling will fade.

Not nice. Hope it goes quickly.:(

Rob

ps. sitting at a computer isn't good for it ! 🙄

The heat pad idea is a good one and the gentle exercise might help, but make sure it is very gentle. When I had all that trouble with my neck and arm last year, the physio gave me something called Bio Freeze which is brilliant, just make sure you wear a glove when applying it as it will... Sorry got interrupted by work and forgot to finish the sentence...

Wear a glove when applying it because if you get it anywhere near anything sensitive, like your eyes, it will sting every bit as much as though you had been chopping chillies.

Might be worth seeing a physiotherapist. Can you get referred via your employer's Ocupatinal Healtyh service?

Unfortunately, no employer, and although I know an extremely good physio I can't afford to pay him :( Just have to grimace and bear it!

Sorry to hear this Northie. My hubby's prone to trapped nerves and pulled muscles as he's always done physically demanding jobs. He's also tall and 'gangly' so often 'sleeps wrong' as he puts it. Of course I have to play 'nurse' and have found heat pads and gentle manipulation to be the best cure. It mostly eases in a day or two but on the odd occasion he's had to resort to a visit to the docs and get a prescription for anti imflamitory meds. Hope yours eases soon. Hugs. XXXXX

Oh Alan - sorry to hear this.
When I hurt my neck I was told to tie a piece of string around my pillow so it was like a butterfly and support my neck that way. I was also given physi exercise which was to keep your head straight but push chin backwards so you get a double chin - it hurt but helped! I think ibruprofen may help but I am thinking more that you may need a stronger pain killer from the GP. I hope it frees itself soon.

Alan sorry to hear of your neck troubles, Alison is spot on when she mentiones antifreeze it is amazing and works wonders on trapped nerves, aching muscles etc etc...Its like a green cream and you just rub it in hard to the effected area.

I have arthritic changes in my cervical joints in my neck and lower back. I don't know where I packed the exercises sheet that I was given by the physio. You have to keep moving and stretching and take painkillers and either a cold or hot pad whichever you feel more beneficial. I had a look online see if I could find the same exercises and came across these ones which may help. Hope you feel better soon.

Sorry to hear about your neck Alan.

I have alot of back problems and often get a trapped sciatic nerve in my leg and my osteopath treats it with manipulation and massage and I also have a set of exercises she gave me for it as well.

I have always used an osteopath ever since I first developed back problems in my early teens. Unfortnunatelly this is not much use to you if you are unable to afford it at the present.

If the problem persists or gets worse I would suggest you ask your doctor if they can refer you to a physio at your local hospital.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone 🙂 I've been trying to keep moving so I don't seize up, and stretching it gently which gives some relief. I'm sure my physio would have this sorted in no time, but it will probably resolve itself before I could get an appointment anyway (fingers crossed!). I'l try those exercises Squidge - thank you for finding them for me 🙂

I suffer with neck pain....i bought one of those memory foam pillows and i find that has helped me quite a bit!!! My neck problems started at work as i did a lot of repetitive work as an assembler...so now i just grin and bear it......🙂

Thanks folks 🙂 Happily it feels much better today - still painful, but not agony, so hopefully will recover in a couple of days. I made sure I didn't sleep on that side last night and it appears to have helped, but will bear all your remedies in mind for the future 🙂
