Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have had diabetes for many years. I at times have been in remission, and other time My Hba1c quite has been very high its 57 at moment down a couple in last few months. Of course, my weight has also been up and down like a yoyo over the last few years. All this yoyoing is/has taking a toll on my body and outlook. Blood pressure, cholesterol levels are high.

Following a few days undergoing a variety of tests at local hospital following a booster inoculation, blood pressure skyrocketed, consistently 200/100, punch drunk and spaced out. I AM PLEASED TO SAY THAT BLOOD PRESSURE IS NOW UNDER CONTROL and MUCH LOWER. I basically had vertigo as well (I am still off work).

I have a pretty good understanding on different foods and how they can affect glucose levels & weight. I have tried keto, low carb and my preference is Mediterranean way of eating.

I am feeling so lost, down, tired, fed up that I had to get it out somewhere. Now in saying that I better go and find my motivation as I liked the way I felt, including the energy I had when I ate a balanced diet.

Thank you for listening.

Glenys

Hi Glenys,

What motivation has worked for you in the past?

Do you think the same would work again or do you want to try different approaches?

You mention weight yo-yoing but may I ask what your normal day to day food choices look like?

Hi Glenys, welcome to the forum.

It's great to hear that you've been able to reduce your blood pressure as it can cause further complications if not maintained.

It's natural to feel overwhelmed however, you've done it before so can do it again. You've already got a pathway for succeeding it might just need a tweak or two.

We're here to support you every step of the way so feel free to rant, share your food choices and any questions you need and we'll do our best to help.

What really worked for me was a particular dress for my daughters wedding.which was 18 months ago. I lost focus.

My normal daily choices are chicken, salmon, veg salad, when i have bread/pasta it whole grain, i use a lunch plate.

I have also been making poor choices foodwise (a lot) following family stress/illness.

Thank you. It is tweaking my food choices to suit my lifestyle and likes and dislikes with food choices. Since healthscare at end of September I have put on a lot of weight, poor food choices/takeaways/cakes/all things that if not in moderation could cause problems and being less active (to the point of not being able to walk my dogs), not working and sitting on butt for 90% of the day.

Anyway have began to make better food choices, portion control, lunchplate 1/2 veg,1/4 meat and 1/4 starchy, yes use wholewheay pasta etc (when I have).
More importantly my dogs are now home and even though it 20 to 30 minutes walk a day, its a start.

I’m with you on the making less than optimal food choices due to stress thing. It’s something I have done over the last year as well.

Do you test your BG levels at home? At least that way you can be more aware of the impact those choices are having when you make them.
Testing at home has changed my unwise food choices but not totally eliminated them as sometimes I really just want to wallow in trifle.

Just laughing at the trifle comment - "Oooh, I know, dear!" is an appropriate comment for me here! - I'm alright until the first spoonful ......

The thing with trifle is back in the day Mum would do a big bowl and everybody would have a small portion but now they sell them so cheap and enticing and the 'family size' just does for one, or is that just me? 😳

Welcome to the forum. 🙂

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I am a single adult man yet Waitrose insists I'm a family of four!

Confession time. One mouthful and then ….

As a child I used to make a crème Caramel. In theory 4 portions.
Mum was late getting back so I decided to eat my (first ) portion (1/4)
A while later Mum still not back. I ate my other portion
……..
Quite a while later Mum still not back, I decided it would be okay to
eat another portion as Mum would only want one
…..
Now it just looked greedy.
Solution: If I ate the other portion when Mum got back she wouldn’t even know that I had made one!!!!!!!

Inevitably I told her and she just laughed.

Made me laugh, glad I am not the only one. A couple of years ago I bought a whole tray, 24 I think, of chocolate oranges in Tesco as they were on special special offer, can never resist a bargain, thought they would do well as little add on presents and stocking fillers for the big day. My sister laughed at me, saying they would never last till then, somewhat affronted I hid them away in the under stairs cupboard, a few weeks passed and when I got them out to wrap them up there were only 3 left. ☹️

I suspect that the pasta and bread are not a good idea - the ordinary sorts are far too high in carbs for me ever to contemplate eating. There are lower carb options, but I will stick to the stir fries, salads and other low carb vegetables which seem to work for me - oh and mushrooms. I can make a low carb trifle - sponges made without wheat flour, real cream and eggs for the custard, whipped cream, sugar free jelly plus gelatine, a little fruit or coconut or grated high cocoa chocolate - with a little improvisation the carbs can be excluded, and I find that I like mashed swede more than mashed potato, cream rather than milk in coffee, cauliflower cheese rather than macaroni cheese and many more.

Brought back an instant memory of the crème caramel my mum used to make in a glass rabbit mould. I always ate the bum

My mum used to make blancmange (or more often pink blancmange - the flavour being "pink") in a plastic rabbit mould! I don't remember having a particular body part though . I wasn't massively keen on any custard related product anyway, though pink or chocolate blancmange wasn't too bad. (Better than my mother's custard anyway!)

That takes me back to mum making jellies, specifically milk jellies, in her rabbit mould.

No idea where it is now.

What did they all used to hold the rabbit up with? I had one but it tipped over and the liquid jelly went all over. Agh.

I used to luv pink blancmange and jelly at school. Our school dinners were divine. Happy memories. :D

How are you doing now Glenys? I am trying to automatically think 'low carb' but in an effort not to have scallop and chips yesterday I must have eaten triple the calories in low carb 'healthy' food! 😳

There were two sticking out stands on the rabbit mould we had so it rested on them in the fridge 🙂

Ours didn’t have a stand. It just used to be propped up with various pickle jars to keep it flat.

We had a glass rabbit mould, and mum used to make milk jelly - a jelly tablet made up with half milk, half water. She also make up something called Symington Creams which I loved. Childhood memories!
