candida albicans

This appears to be the yeast responsible for thrush etc.

A US clinic website described the alleged association between mushrooms and candida albicans as ‘the most enduring myth”

Thanks @Inka - was just returning from a quick internet search!

So I looked up the Harcombe diet and I am confused already.
What can you eat on the Harcombe diet?

"You're allowed to eat unlimited unprocessed meat, fish, eggs, salads and vegetables, apart from potatoes and mushrooms. Mushrooms feed Candida albicans, while potatoes are very high in carbohydrate so they encourage Candida albicans and hypoglycaemia."

As I said above 'I think her books could do with a good editor'.
There is a undue emphasis on Candida for those who do not have it. The embargo on mushrooms relates only to Candida and is questionable (or, as my wife says, wrong).
No point in arguing over typos or potatoes.

For what you can eat, see Harcombe Diet article (and scroll down to seven added links to handy summaries and guides). Key rules include: separation of carbs from fats; and maximum three meals a day, no snacks, to allow adequate time for digestion of carbs (insulin) and burning of fat (weight loss, glucagon)*. Phase 1 which lasts for 5 days or more deals with cravings and kicks off weight loss. It would be interesting to know how the effect on fasting glucose compares with the results of Prof Taylor's Counterpoint study (but that's a topic for another day).

You really need a copy of Zoe Harcombe's 3 Step Plan book (or one of her other books about the diet) to follow how it hangs together and understand the details.

* My interest is in sustaining my weight loss. I have not seen this helpful pair of rules anywhere else, They are supported by the interesting data Marty Kendall presents on his website.

Was that autocorrected, and meant to say hyperglycaemia?

I’ve no idea what candida albicans are, but I eat loads of mushrooms and they don’t appear to affect BG levels.

Potatoes, however would cause BG increases, not hypos!?
yes i meant hyperglycaemia as in high blood sugar and Yes mushroom is a fungi but it does not mean eating it would give you a fungal infection. Hence my confusion.
Although probiotics help diabetes and they work on fungal problems. Its too complex. Also i think we all go through different stages. There is possibly no way that works for everyone. .

Perhaps she means 'magic mushrooms' 🙂

The theory is that the candida has run riot in the body, causing sensitivities to fungus-related foods, mushrooms being the obvious one and also some mature cheeses, etc.

Candida is alleged to be involved in some cases of Chronic Fatigue amongst other conditions.

I read somewhere that some mushrooms kill Candida.

More to the point, I have had a closer look at the 'How the Harcombe Diet came about' in her '3 Step Plan' book, a section I only skip read before. She ascribes her Candida, Food Intolerance and Hypoglycemia (not a typo!) to her previous calorie counting yo-yo diets. I'll post a short summary when I have a bit more time.

If separation of carbs from fats is a key rule, that is entirely contrary to what works for me. Porridge or fruits with cream, apple/pear always with cheese.

That is a general rule designed to prevent cravings, promote weight loss/prevent weight gain, and avoid yo-yo dieting. You are doing exactly the right thing for you if your aim is to avoid sugar swings, according to the Glucose Goddess, etc. Thank you for the reminder.

Ah sorry to hear this @Nayshiftin

Big hugs to you. Sometimes BG just goes off on one even with a tried-and-trusted meal. There’s lots that can affect BG levels that is not the food you’ve eaten. You are trying your hardest, and the odd wobble every so often won’t undo all that hard work. Keep going!

I’m sticking with mushrooms myself - we get through at least a punnet a week, and I’m not going to change that without significantly more evidence than just one controversial source

If I told you I'd have to kill you. 🙂
oh that might solve all problems but stained glass by Miss Marples dont really appeal. lol lol Just as well I know not to send for those mushroom. I am lucky to have some cultivated ones . They are cheap.

yes , until a GP says dont Ill eat says Vitamin D which I am low in and on meds for too. So I dont think mushrooms are the problem.
I do keep going but think we can find a reason for everything .
Bloods this Tuesday again and GP is taking care. Says low folic acid snd B12 are prone to low moods.
She will wait on results before seeing whats best.
Thank you for your support on here. I do appreciate it a lot.
On meds for folic acid and a hit course then a daily dose of Vit D.
Will see this result but RBC is mega high so we shall see.

Great that your GP is on top of it. Hope supplemtation helps if you go down that route.

I also think the relentlessly wet winter has been particularly difficult mood-wise. Each day seems to start with a downpour - and even if it eases off a bit later, somehow the start of the day…and not being able to take the dog out, again, so I have to fit that in later… kinda sets my (grumpy) mood 😛

No, you don’t have to stop eating mushrooms. It’s (allegedly) only people with long-standing/systematic Candida that get symptoms from them due to sensitivities.

I am sorry to hear about this. You will, unfortunately, have to inform the DVLA. I hope your employers can help you out. What a terrible situation to be in. As other more experienced posters have already said diet could still be an alternative.

I looked at the Zoe Harcombe website and was not terribly impressed. David Unwin and Michael Moseley seem to talk a lot of sense. Their books may help.
