Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Dear Fellow Diabetics.
Since 2013 I've been having problems with my Feet. I had my first Big Toe amputated half way in January of 2014 which did not sort it out so when in to have more taken off. Over the next few months my left foot stayed swollen which GP put down to post op. After a family holiday to centre parks my foot Had doubled in size was very painful and hot. I went back to see the podiatrists who new what the problem on straight away even more they had done xrays MRI or taken temperatures I had charcot foot syndrome. Up until then I had never heard of this. Because my foot was injured and I have neuropathy I never Felt that the foot was broken and had been walking on it for months. The Charcot had affected in the midfoot ankle and heel bone. In the Midfoot I. Had a fracture right across and the temperatures were 5-6°c higher than the same on the left foot. So then I was put into a cast which had to come off every week so my foot could be xray and temps taken. They told me that it could take a year for the Charcot to heal enough to go into moon boot then six months in that and then into specially made shoes.

Unfortunately over the next year's I lost one toe after another and ended up with no toes on my left foot. After two years it had become stable enough to go into moon boot and then just before Christmas I had my shoes made. Not long after the left foot was "ok" my right foot join the party starting off with charcot after I had a fall. It started in my uncle which has twisting it around. I lost my second toe.

Then just after much birthday in May my big toe had a small area of hard skin appear so made a appointment with podiatrist for two days time but the day after I woke up and my foot Had doubled it was very red and hot. The Reedness that had started to track back and was going up my leg. They found behind the hard skin a deep infection which had turned into cellulitilymphoedema lymphangitis, lymphedema and cellulitis.
Two days later I had the big toe debrided to try and get rid of the infection and save the toe. Three days later it turned into Sepsis and Septic shock I wash rushed to ITU and had fluid resuscitation as my organs had started to shut down.
Start of July I was able to go home with oral antibiotics and visits to podiatry surgery nurse to dRess the wound.
Last week the wound was starting to deteriorate so was admitted to have IV antibiotics.over the weekend deteriorated even further so he made the decision to amputate the big toe but unfortunately for me it turns out that the infection was so widespread I had to have all my toes amputated.

Has anyone else been through this and how do you cope with having no toes on both feet.

Thank you for reading this
Yours
Stuart

Yes, Stuart you've had a terrible time, but you're still here to tell the tale, thank goodness. What on earth were your BG readings like with all these infections hammering you?

Goodness me, that was awful to read, wishing you all the best with your recovery.

Hello Stuart, I'm really sorry about your feet. That is scary. :( I hope somebody can advise you.

Hello Stuart, and sorry to read your story.

Oh my goodness I am so sorry to hear your story. I feel very tearful reading it. I have no idea how to advise you. Would Diabetes UK be able to offer any advice? I there a diabetes support group near you?

Welcome Stuart. Very sorry to here. Diet Tonic water is good for circulation & may help. Good luck with things.

My BG levels are so erratic due to the infections and the Sarcoidosis having a battle.
I am lucky enough to live near a small area but well equipped local hospital and you get to know the Staff well so when there's a problem they do listen to your side of story

Thank you Wirrlass and everyone for their support.

Hi Stuart been thinking of you and wondering how you are this evening?

Hi Wirrlass. Hope all is well.
Am still in hospital after the amputations
The wound has been bleeding a lot today and in lot of Pain. Had a little walk over to the loo.

My BM are all over the place but I have my pump with CGM so try to keep them stable.

Good to hear from you Stuart & all good here thanks. Understanding of the pain you're experiencing - I trust the medics are frequently topping up your pain relief as there's no need for you to suffer. How long do you expect to stay in hospital? They like to chuck people out fairly quickly these days (too qickly sometimes!) to recover at home tho I do appreciate it is early days for you yet. Hope you get to have a decent sleep tonight and that the bleeding is soon stemmed. When you are able do please keep us updated as to your progress, take care when walking to the little boys room🙄

PS. Dont be alarmed about your bgls being all over the place - this is quite normal when the body is under stress but good to hear you have the necessary gear to adjust to keep on top of them. Take care
