That is the question.
Well, with the updated number to go on the shielding list I'm now included!!!
I'm 44, technically obese (hate that term, but I am) and diabetic (treated as type 2).
I'm due to have my first vaccine tomorrow afternoon.
I am undecided about whether to shield or not.
Theres pros and cons to staying at home. The cons outweigh the pros.
I know the shielding is voluntary.
Work has got better with regards to covid and I feel less stressed there now.
I'm so undecided.
I'm going to ask at my gp surgery tomorrow as that's where I'm going for jab number 1.

Unfortunately I am not on the shielding list so I don't know how I would feel if I was added to it. I think your strategy to talk it over with your surgery is a good idea, and their perspective might help you with your decision.

Ultimately it’s your decision of course, but it seems mad to shield now when you’ve been working on the front line all the way through! Especially if you’re getting your first vaccine tomorrow! Talking it over with your doctor sounds like a good idea, good luck 🙂

I assume you have received your letter, what is your QCovid Risk score?

The government site gives the threshold of
  • an absolute risk of 0.5% (or 5 in 1,000)
  • a relative risk of 10 (or 10 times the baseline risk)
When I calculated mine as a T1D, aged 44 with a BMI of around 30, it came back at 0.0118% so no shielding for me!

To shield or not to shield @Stitch147 .
The only advise I can give is, to weigh things up and do what you feel is best/ wisest for you .

The vaccine won’t be effective for a week or two.

Hi Stitch, I was annoyed that I got the email today, as I don’t feel I need to shield as had covid already. Although it has given me a heart condition. Which is probably why been added to new list. Plus high bmi and postcode.
Considering that you haven’t had covid despite working in busy store in area with high covid rates, you have been lucky not to get it.
But maybe could use shielding to get time off work if you want a break?
I probably will still go out to do own shopping as found doing it online frustrating.

After receiving my shielding email yesterday morning I had a good chat with my other half and also my work place.
I've taken the decision to continue to be at work. I've worked this long without shielding and have been one of the few people in my workplace to remain covid free. I will carry on avoiding people as much as possible. All the managers are aware of the situation. And I can go backstage and do stuff if I feel it's too busy on the shop floor.

Mum got a snail mail letter today, I open all the post as she can't cope with things now, they tell her to shield. Why now? She never goes out anyways but I could bring stuff back. :( Not sure what shielding is to be honest.
