I had my first counslling sesson today because i have been suffering from panic attacks i have been suffering them over the last year getting worse over the last 6 months i didnt want to feel like a failure so i didnt tell my gp or dsn only my family and work mates knew untill a few weeks ago when i broke down at the gps after a diabetic check i didnt want to go on to tablets{cause of side effects} so there recommeded counselling so i thought i would share this with you guys as i had not been on here much lately and i this is the reason why .:(

I hope you are feeling better, I'm glad you are getting help.

(((((hug))))) Well done going for the counselling, I think that's a really good idea & hope you find it very helpful. Don't try & carry the world on your own... Xxx

Sorry to hear that you are suffering with panic attacks! You are not alone in this and you are definitely not a failure in any way! Ive suffered with them on and off most of my life. CBT is excellent for this. I would definitely recommend getting abook. The best advice I can give is to go with the panic and not fight it and it subsides quicker!

That's alright if you are in a situation where you can let 'fly' when you have them, but might not be so good if you are trying to drive your car or interview someone for a job or speaking to an important client ...... Personally, mine would always manifest at the most inconvenient times.

Counselling is great.

But don't dismiss the pills out of hand either. I thought it meant I was a failure too and stubbornly refused all attempts to get me on them until I was ready to admit I couldn't get over it on my own and even if they were mind-altering, I was gonna have to try em.

Well they didn't alter my mind in whatever way I must have thought they could! Someone else described them recently as 'evening things out for you' which enables you to actually cope with stuff you couldn't deal with prior to taking em. It isn't instant either, it builds up slowly and you don't realised this is happening until you do summat you couldn't do before and don't have a panic attack.

Good luck with it, and I hope you will start to feel a lot better soon.

My Mum experiences panic attacks so I've seen how awful and delibilitating they are - well done for getting help, I hope the counselling helps you a lot.
