If you like it, why not try it and find out what affect it has on you
Some times our body's reaction is not what we expect based on the carb content.

So, take a reading, drink a snifter of tia maria and test your levels 2 hours later.
It's all for science and your health 😎
before Tia Maria 11.6
after Tia Maria 14.9

Looks like special occasions only then although you may need to do a retest just to be sure 😉 We always suggest that people don't make any drastic dietary decisions based on just one set of results.

Did you measure out 30mls? It is interesting to note that it has raised you just over 3 whole mmols, which is the generalized advice given to most of us when we start on insulin.... ie that 10g carbs will raise your BG by approximately 3mmols. Was your second reading 2 hours afterwards, because if so it suggests that you haven't produced any insulin to bring it down yet or your body is extremely resistant.... Do you have much/any weight to lose or are you reasonably slim?

Just looked at your introductory post and there is a possible ? about you maybe being Type 1 which that Tia Maria test result kind of made me wonder about. I suppose a bit like a glucose tolerance test on a very small scale. I quite like the idea of a Tia Maria test for Type 1 as oppose to a blood test for c-peptide and GAD antibody.... well I would if I actually liked Tia Maria. 🙄

thank you @rebrascora ,interesting information..

What!!! You had a triple! 😱 You don't do things by halves do you! 😎 Unfortunately this is what you need to learn about diabetes.... it is all about portion control, particularly with higher carb foods. You can eat as much cabbage and lettuce etc as you like but you need to reduce the "normal" recommended portion size of the higher carb treat stuff. When you start breaking a digestive biscuit in half and having the other half a couple of days later, you know you are getting there with the right sort of mentality.

Is the reading bad??@rebrascora @Bloden
I think with your levels being quite high at the moment, sweet treats like Tia Maria are probably not the best idea and it raised your BG by more than 3 mmols which is too much anyway, but it would have been interesting to see what effect a normal 30ml shot would have had..... maybe an experiment for another night.

Portion control is important, for fruits like apples, pears or oranges I share with my other half.
Yes that was a whopping amount of Tia Maria, would have been about 30g carbs.

@Calypso I’m not sure whether spine problems like that change the height you would use to calculate your BMI (I’d guess not but that’s just a guess). So, putting your height in as 5ft 6, the NHS calculator says your weight should be 52.2kg - 70.6kg.

Honestly Inka,Iv definitely shrunk.Perhaps it’s the way I hold myself. But Iv 100% shrunk.

lol this reminds me of shortly after I was diagnosed… thinking salted caramel baileys would be absolutely fine cuz it’s a drink. Probably should of gone to A&E that night

Wasn't that ignorance and innocence bliss whilst it lasted though! I think we all had some quite naive ideas in those early days of diagnosis.

'Dear Patient, Please attend surgery for a glucose tolerance test - bring your bottle of Grand Marnier with you as we are not licenced to carry a stock.'

(Other liqueurs are available in a supermarket near you)

@Calypso - we all shrink as we get older - I've lost 2 inches! I was only 5ft 3 to begin with.

The other thing is - have you ventured into the Learning Zone as yet? - cos I think it would help you, honest. You do have to Register separately for it, but it's free, and as it's run by DUK, (as this forum is) the info is reliable. - bright orange tab across the top of every forum page, or https://learningzone.diabetes.org.uk/?

Oh God - years ago (before the drink/drive) we used to occasionally (cos it wasn't cheap) frequent restaurant within the Whittington Arms. Half timbered and brick allegedly the original home of one Richard Whittington - and we probably all know about him! Anyway - run by two Italian brothers. Featured a huge hors d'oevres trolley and an even larger dessert trolley, on which the bottom shelf of which were also displayed a selection of all sorts of liqueurs and the half gallon jug of single cream. Any dessert you happened to choose could have a relevant liqueur poured over it, prior to the cream. Automatically offered.

Obviously they offered Tiramisu and Kahlua though, not Tia Maria. Grand Marnier with anything resembling orange flavour and lots of other ones I fail to recall now - whatever with whatever - they 100% knew what they were doing and only offered whatever it was which enhanced the flavour.

Hey Ho - memories are made of things like this!
