Hello people!

I have recently been put on a low dose of levothyroxine because, it seems, my thyroid is slightly underactive.

Is anyone else on the same thing? And my main question: has it had any effects on blood sugar levels?

Hi Munjeeta, yes I'm on thyroxine too. I went on it same time as I was diagnosed with diabetes and before I started insulin, so not sure if it affected sugar levels - don't think so. - Have you noticed any difference?

Well I'm not sure! I've been on it now for just over a month, the doctor said I would not feel any affect for 4-6 weeks. And my month 'anniversary' has coincided with my decision to try cutting down on carbs... My sugar levels have been so much lower in the last couple of days, I'm just trying to work out if it's the thyroid tablets boosting my metabolism or the low-carb diet!

Could be a combination of the two.

Yes... You're right, I should probably just stop trying to analyse it and enjoy the fact that my blood sugars are better! 🙄

Thyroids and Diabetes

I've got the opposite problem, i've got a slightly overactive thyroid. It was diagnosed at the same time as my diabetes but that might be because it was the first time i'd been to a doctor in years (certainly the first time i had a blood test). I'd be interested to see if these things are related, coz i don't think i've ever found a diffinative answer. My Thyroid dissorder book says that diabetes is "associated" with an underactive thyroid, whatever that means.

Yes, I was tole there was an association too. I think it is because they are both conditions which are related to immune deficiency.

"Associated" means that both conditions can be present at the same time, not that one causes the other.

Yes, that's it, both conditions are auto-immune, basically your immune system backfiring on itself is my understanding. There are a few other conditions that are also thought to be linked, such as coeliac disease. It's a bit of a bummer, but at least they can be controlled with tablets or whatever. I'm certainly starting to feel better since the tablets, I've shaken that awful lethargy and at last have some energy back!

My thyroid problem came before my diabetes. I never found that thyroxine affected the bg's, but they did give me more energy. Helps burning off the carbs 🙂
