I've been self-treating for a good while now what I thought was thrush which wouldn't go away. I have been putting off going to the Dr (not for modesty but I honestly thought it would go away if I did all the usual treatments when it is thrush). Anyway I had to give in and today saw one of our lady Drs. She has diagnosed a condition called "Lichen sclerosus" which is yet again an autoimmune disease, often linked to an underactive thyroid which the Consultant is monitoring me for following my last Diabetic Clinic check last month.

However the point of this thread is to say "girls DO get recurring thrush checked out" - I think I've left it rather too long and, although they can get this present condition under control with steroid cream, I may have to go and see a Gynae consultant in case things have developed in a way I'm not daring to think of at the moment. 😱

I did a google search and the description sounds horrible - it also said that men can get the condition too.

Try not to beat yourself up - apparently in the early stages its often mistaken for thrush and just to be annoying makes thrush more likely.

I hope that the cream clears things up and that you won't need to see any specialist.

Yes they can, I've had it (thrush) and it is rather unpleasant.

You can get thrush if you go on antibiotics as this kills both the "good" and "bad" bacteria. There are apparently good bacteria which keep the thrush organisms in check.

The Dr was very sensible and gave me a three page print out about the condition (they all know we go straight onto Google don't they?) so I feel pretty filled in about it but I would be the first to tell someone else off for leaving it to develop this long so I'm rather cross with myself (and just more than a little bit frightened to tell the truth) and the cream stings like hell just at the moment but should stop the itching in a few days the Dr said !!!

Hi Faith, Sorry to hear about this. I would definitely agree with you about getting it checked out. I ignored "thrush" for ages because I was scared of going to the doctors. In the end it turned out to be due to anxiety and once I knew what it was I stopped panicing about it and it got a lot better. I hope the cream works soon, I know how horrible the "thrush" feels - I'm not sure if this will help but I was told to use a cool setting on a hairdryer to dry the area - it is quite soothing too. Slightly embarassing though ...

I used to have thrush on a nearly monthly basis back when my sugars were all over the place. Went to the doctor's every single time and it got so bad they put the medication on a repeat prescription for me... 😱

I think they did a few further tests as well as it was obviously a bit suspicious to have it so often, but nothing came out of that.

Since my levels have stabilised a bit I must admit I haven't had any problems with it for about half a year now! Can't stress enough how happy I am with that, used to drive me up the wall! 😡

Sounds horrible, I hope it clears up soon.

I've mentioned the recurring thrush to my nurse at the diabetic clinic and she said it would calm down again when they got me stabilised on insulin. My levels have never been that high (12s before Christmas was about the worst) but I hoped she was right and went on using the Canestan cream etc to no avail.

I thought it was getting a bit too often and waited and hoped but this week I knew it was something rather more than ordinary thrush and I had hoped she would say there was another type of thrush which was resistant to the usual remedies. Now I know better.

I'm told that if you're on steroid treatments and get thrush, then live yoghurt used as a cream on the affected spot can replace some of the good bacteria. It does seem to help with the actual thrush, I've used it in the past and it cools things down nicely.

Vince, I hope the treatment for the Lichen sclerosus works quickly.

That does actually work!

Hi I am a male sufferer of both Lichen and Diabetes. Are you on Sitagliptin? has your condition worsened or got better? have you had pancreatic attacks?

thanks for your help. best wishes Shane

You are very unlikely to get a reply from Vince 13, last seen on the forum in 2014, and this thread is almost 9 years old! Sorry!
Welcome to the forum, however.

I always take pro biotics during and after a course of anti biotics, I am talking the proper pro biotics, not just yoghurt or yakult, health food shops have pro biotics for specific problems.

Hope you feel better soon Vince-13

ha ha yes that would be drastic after 9 years !! didn't spot your above post, thanks for the heads up 🙂
