O.K- So I'm not understanding/getting it -after countless appts talking about what sport H does etc and what he does for that- lucozade sport etc -we had an annual appt with dietician this AM- to coincide with a drop in clinic-discuss hols ratio etc.Dietician not there- oh well -so DSN Talks about sport .So my question do people take a snack within 1 hr of sport? she suggested millkshake with half a dose -we were never told this.Feel like Im not getting it! she wanted H to have a CGM and was surprised he didnt want 1 or a fancy meter - not a great appt

I would only have a snack if my glucose was low or I was hungry!

hi delb t
ahhh the challenges of managing T1 with exercise!

The bad news is that I dont think there is a "one size fits all" when it comes to maintaining respectable BGs during and after exercise, the good news however is that with a bit of testing, I def. think its possible to manage T1 successfully. There are a couple of variables which affect my outcomes
- timing of exercise (how long since last injection, is there still some insulin circulating)
- my BG before exercise (if I am above 9, I ALWAYS need one unit QA, otherwise I end up in the high teens at the end)
- type of exercise (for some reason my BGs seem to like running, whereas an aerobics class has a different effect, doesnt make any sense, I know!)
- obvious variables are duration and intensity of exercise as well.

When I started running I tested myself every 10 minutes and if I was 'low' eg 4.8 I would 'top up' with jelly babies, then run and test again 10 minutes later. Thats the strategy that I have found works for me, but everyone is different.

Sorry if this post doesnt give you a 'clear' answer, but as I said the good news is that T1s can exercise like non T1s, the only difference being that we have to work out a strategy that works, only way to do this in my experience is to 'test test test'. A guy I met on the dafne course ran the London marathon last April and was 6.2 at the end of it !!!!! 😉😉😉

Is Ragnar Hannas no help Del?

Failing which dare I suggest "Childrenwithdiabetes" OR an email to Runsweet?

Bit late replying as we've been away. I've found through trial and error that at some times of day my son needs a snack without insulin for exercise, and at other times he needs a snack with a bolus or would end up high after the exercise. He did a lot of swimming on holiday, and when it was in the lake rather than the pool (ie out of his depth and no lifeguards), I dared not give any insulin beforehand, however each time he came out in double figures! Be careful correcting for highs after exercise, else he could drop rapidly - I tend to use 2/3 of the usual correction amount.

Thanks folks - have calmed down abit since last weeks appt - the more I think about the info weve been given - no 2 nurses have said the same thing!- anyway H has signed up to do a half marathon!- so lots of reading/ trialing stuff etc and whist abit of me thinks oh no- Im chuffed he wants to and think we have come a long way in the last 18 months

good luck to H with his half marathon (I'm doing one in a few years when I'm 30).

DAFNE gave good points on exercise, if you want I can dig it out for you?
