Diabetes ehh...!
What a scunner, it fair rips my knitting, one of my favourite meals chilli con carne seems to be off the menu because of the very high carb content, I take it because of the kidney beans enclosed within, I suppose could make a chilli without said beans, but not quite the same..
It gets me down at times, not being able to eat favourite foods....!
Is there any favourite foods you miss ...

The kidney beans are highish in carbs Martin but they are mostly fibre and may not rise your BGs as much as you think. As an insulin user I don’t even count them when I inject. Try them you may be surprised! I couldn’t give up my legumes, we have to give up so much as it is. 🙂 PS never heard that expression “ rip my knitting”.Love it!

Thanks .. @eggyg , ..x

All my favourites are low carb foods so I do not feel at all deprived.

Chili doesn't adversely affect me i.e. doesn't require much more insulin than other meals - it's the sauce that you need to be aware of most (e.g. sugar in tomatoes), plus any accompaniment - I can manage OK with basmati rice (longer grain, slower digestion), but pitta bread out of the question :(

Have you tried the low carb pitta breads you can get from the low carb megastore? I actually prefer them to normal ones and Mr Radders and the grandsons ate loads on a recent picnic. They’re 5g carbs each. My favourite way to eat them is lightly toasted and split with crunchy whole nut peanut butter and sliced banana. Makes a decent breakfast of about 25g carbs without much of a spike.
I also use them as a quick mini pizza base sometimes although the tortillas are even better for that and only 3g carbs.
I buy several packs at a time, separate them with strips of grease proof paper and freeze them. The bags they come in make useful food bags too as they are ziplock.

Thanks @Radders, I will look into doing just that! 🙂

Me too... Cakes, biscuits, even chocolate I can get along quite happily without but really miss bread - sourdough, ciabatta and especially olive bread. ...Tried Budgen - meh. ...Rips my knittin', too, Martin.

Never heard of the low carb mega store... hits google 🙂

Low carb megastore low carb, multigrain bagals (2g net carbs per bagal) ... yes!

Rip my knitting , is an old Scots ting...!

Hello I think that it's being labelled as "high carb" because of the rice that is traditionally eaten with it. As a type 1 if I were to have just a bowl of chilli, I wouldn't give myself any insulin at all

Neither would I Martin, but there again I wouldn't enjoy it.
