Thirst

I had a large thirst.
Mainly as I was continuously using the loo, as my body tried to remove the excess sugar.
As you get on top of your BG the trips to the loo should decrease, as should the need to drink.

Do you have a follow up with your doctor for medication, or any further advice?

We generally suggest people keep a food diary including a rough idea of portion size and test immediately before eating a meal and then 2 hours afterwards. The difference between those readings will tell you how your body coped with the food you ate.

Ideally you would want your pre meal readings to be between 4 and 7 and no more than 8.5 after a meal, but in the early stages when your levels are already running so much higher than those ideal levels, all you are looking for is a rise in Blood Glucose (BG) of no more than 3 whole units. So if your premeal reading was say 13.6, then you have your meal and test again 2hrs later, you want that second reading to be less than 16.6. If it is more, then your body couldn't cope with the amount of carbs in that meal, so if you had 3 pieces of potato, then try just 2 next time. If you had 2 slices of bread, try just one next time and test again, to see if that came within the 3mmol increase. Fill your plate up with leafy green veggies and protein to make up for the shortfall in food as there is no need to go hungry. You may also want to eat more fat as this will help to provide you with energy and will stop you from feeling hungry and not cause your BG to rise. I like to cook my cabbage with a knob of butter or have cauliflower mash with a dollop of cream cheese. Cauliflower is a great lower carb alternative for mashed potato or it can be grated and used instead of rice or couscous and who doesn't love cauliflower cheese!

Many of us have creamy Greek natural yoghurt with a few berries (which are the lowest carb fruits... or rhubarb stewed with a little sweetener since it is just coming into season) and mixed seeds or chopped nuts for breakfast or surprisingly a cooked English breakfast of bacon eggs, high meat content sausages, mushrooms and tomato is a good start to the day for us diabetics trying to reduce carbohydrate intake but avoid the baked beans, hash browns and bread/toast.

Hope that gives you some ideas to get you started.
