Then read this! I am still staggered at amputee physio by people who go outside to smoke or vape!

And yet, the cigs are hidden behind shutters but the vapes are on full display to all, see any shop or supermarket.

And there are Vape shops in every town selling products containing who knows what. A friend went over to vaping from 10/day and became a stinking Puffing MBilly {train emoji} most of his waking hours. After reading various reports he is back on 10 per day!

I’ve seen quite a bit of coverage over the past year expressing particular worries about how vapes are being designed and packaged in a way that makes them attractive to children.

What was once heralded as an exit strategy for smokers has soon been mired in the same old nicotine/cig-industry shenanigans

When the kids were young we used to take them to a local sweetshop for a treat. One day we went in the shop had a massive display of vapes in there. Never went in again. I quite often seen teenagers vaping. The whole thing is unregulated and just seems to be another way to hook people on nicotine.

I always had my doubts that vapeing would be proved to be safe.

Presumably there are slightly less toxins in them than cigarettes? Especially as they were invented as a step down from smoking ciggies. But someone I knew who used to smoke cigarettes regularly and then switched to vaping, said that in a way it’s worse because if you smoke a cigarette you eventually get to the end of it, which forces you to stop for a while. But vaping just goes on and on.
And I suppose as far as the manufacturers are concerned, it’s just a product and if more people want to buy them, then it’s more profit for them :(

I’ve never smoked myself, either cigarettes or vapes, and whilst I do get that once you’ve started, it’s a very hard thing to give up, I also can’t understand why on earth anyone would want to start in the first place, especially these days when the dangers are better understood. I’ve had asthma most of my life and sound like a 40-a-day smoker every time I get a cold, so no way would I want to risk making that worse. But I guess in decades gone by attitudes were different

OK I just read a bit of the article explaining why vapes are supposedly better than cigarette smoke (i.e no actual smoke or combustion going on), probably should have done that first lol
Still don’t understand why anyone would want to fill their lungs with anything that shouldn’t be there though

Visit any hospital & you'll see patients outside smoking or vaping with all sorts of ailments going on, find both disgusting habit & at £16 for pack of cigs it's one expensive habit also.

For these reasons vaping nicotine here in Oz is now banned unless prescribed by a doc.

I can understand this, but on the other hand it did work really well as an off-ramp for me.

Hi,

Ex smoker here (stopped 26 years ago with D diagnosis), it's not that anyone wishes to fill lungs with smoke, that just happens to be the fastest and convenient way to absorb the nicotine hence the buzz, especially noticeable first cig in the morning.

To give up is really the absolute best thing anyone one can ever do, there are so so many benefits, but you don't realise that at the time and just how difficult it can be to stop.

Although it is just so much better not to start!

Not just patients though, my Father was one time at Hospital in ICU with heart problems, later in the day i spotted the Consultant in charge at one of the hospital gates, with a crafty one so can definitely be a case of do as i say and not as i do!
Looked a bit sheepish to say the least when he saw me.

Smoking killed my Dad at 65. I hate the habit as you can imagine. I know it's an addiction but I think smokers should try and only they should be allowed to vape but supervised by Drs.

It's a free country but Drs should make an effort

Thank you @Kol, I hope I haven’t offended anyone with my comments, it was not intended.

The only reason my grandmother gave up was because she couldn’t afford it any more. My dad used to smoke cigars, it was his Sunday afternoon treat, but the lounge afterwards would be full of smoky fog and he bought an air purifier to clear it. Then once he’d changed the filters a few times and seen what they looked like it dawned on him what his lungs must look like and that was the encouragement for him to change. My mum almost gave up but couldn’t quite, fair enough she tried, but now pretends she doesn’t, has sneaky ones when she thinks no-one is looking, doesn’t seem to realise that we can all smell it on her, finally admitted to dad that she still smokes sometimes but says her cough is because of asthma not cigarettes and then wonders why she didn’t cough when she was in hospital with pneumonia a couple of years ago. Sigh. Well it’s her body her life, I’m overweight and don’t always eat as healthily as I should so I guess we’ve all got our vices. But she regularly berates me about my weight but if you dare to mention that you know she still smokes then all hell breaks loose. I’d have more respect for her if she said “yes I do still smoke, I know it isn’t good for me, but I don’t care”. Some people can’t be helped, I just wish she’d be honest about it.

Absolutely no offence taken nor even suspected!

There was a program on TV the other night, I caught a part of it - they tested the contents of a vape and there were loads of different chemicals in it, not just nicotine. They pointed out that it was not normal to be inhaling those chemicals.

They also looked at the illegal/unlicensed vapes - apparently some of those can contain a very large amount of nicotine, so are totally counterproductive for anyone thinking vapes may help them quit.

Although I don't smoke and never got beyond a non inhaled drag to look cool when I was a teenager, I do understand addictions.
I find it odd that a diabetes forum who has members frequently discussing high carb food designed to be addictive has this thread with no sympathy towards those with a different addiction.

Do you remember when they banned supermarkets from displaying sweets at the tills? Sweets have been replaced with vaping products. Both sweets and vapes being available in sweet flavours, all very appealing to kids of course.
