I finally had a reply from DVLA today...telling me I am now on a restricted licence, and need to send mine in so it can be re-issued ;(

I feel so sad. I know I knew it was inevitable, but seeing it in black and white just hits home. I will probably feel fine about it once I get my licence back, but I just needed to vent a little amoungst people who know what it's like.

AAARRRRGGGGHHHHHH!

If I had known what life was gonna throw at me, I don't think i would have done either!

I got a bit down when I got that letter too, but providing you have good control there's no reason why it won't be renewed every three years, and as a small bonus, renewal is free 🙂

Don't worry Doddy, it just means a new licence every 3 years - and photo ID for free. You'll get a remined to supply a new photo when original is 10 yrs old.

Although I admit the issue upset me at the time, as I'd passed my test in Western Australia in Aug 1995, moved to New Zealand, where I owned my first ever car, diagnosed March 1996, returned to UK May 1996, exchanged WA for GB licence, started insulin Nov / Dec 1996 and handed back licence, so now have to renew Feb every 3 years. However, I'm still inconvienced (in terms of jobs for which I can apply) by having right to drive minibuses and vans removed - I was driving minibus as part of my job in NZ. I know I could get right to drive vans, but it's not worth the effort, and it's minibuses that matter to me.

However, I continue to drive my own car and tractors and Land Rover for one employer, plus ride my bike (pedal cycle) lots, too - no licence for that! 🙂

I guess I never thought of the benefit of not having to pay after 10yrs to renew. that's one bonus then!
I think it's just the realisation of it all.

I know most of us who drive goes through this same emotion most probably, and although I feel silly for letting it upset me the way it has, I can't help it! It's the one thing I acheived, all by myself. And no-one is gonna take it away from me.

The other thing I am having trouble with is, remembering to test before i drive. Hubby had a go at me the other day for not doing so. I knew I would be ok as i had previously eaten so very unlikely to be low, but I know I need to do it for insurance purposes...it's just a pain that's all.
