There is always more than one way of thinking about something

Well .… it's hard for a T1 and always has been, knowing about Banting, Best & McLeod's discovery was enabled using doggies.

OTOH the marvellous drug that stopped morning sickness …..

@Amity Island I was tempted by the book, Sapiens. I’ll definitely put it on my list after your recommendation 🙂

Rats are very intelligent - as intelligent as dogs. Animal testing is a hugely emotive subject and the less we can do of it, the better.

If you have a strong stomach, you might want to watch Earthlings online (narrated by Joaquin Phoenix). That film describes animals as our equals - fellow Earthlings. Again, a warning - there are unpleasant scenes showing how we use and abuse animals. It makes you reconsider a lot...

I don’t think humans will ever act perfectly but I do think we should all do as much as possible to preserve our environment and other life on Earth.

Hi Inka,
The sapiens book was an epic read, very popular given its size. There is also a follow up book about the future of humans, which I've not read yet.
I'll give the earthlings documentary a watch tonight. Sounds very interesting and thought provoking.

Hi Inka,

I just started to watch the Earthlings documentary. I couldn't watch any further than chapter 1. There are things in there that go way beyond my previous awareness of the matter. I wouldn't even want to put into words.

It certainly sums up, very graphically what I was alluding to.

It’s hard watching, for sure @Amity Island I don’t think you have to watch the whole thing to get the message. Most people don’t, or have to have frequent breaks and watch a little bit at a time. It is very shocking, as you saw.

But thought-provoking and challenging.

I ordered Sapiens and I’m intrigued to read it. It sounds fascinating.

Inka,

You know, for many years, I've seen "those people" that stand near town centres at a stand with some pictures, trying to get people to listen and help with their cause. Until I started watching the Earthlings documentary just 2 days ago, I never understood what "they" were so passionate about.

Now I get it!

It's shocked me just how little I knew about it and how i've been blinkered most of my life.

How come these people knew about all this, long before the internet, and also how little of it is regularly reported in the press.

I think the Press like to associate animal rights with hippies and left wingers and people who are more than a little eccentric. So valid concerns about animal abuse are ignored or dismissed as some kind of lunatic fringe. But you’re right - the true facts are rarely reported. This is particularly true about the slaughter of animals for food. It’s easier to turn a blind eye. Most people eat meat so they don’t want to take a closer look at the reality of meat production. It’s easier not to know,

How did people know about these things before the internet? From leaflets handed out by organisations and their supporters: leaflets about vivisection, about abattoirs, about fur-farming, etc.

It can be overwhelming to see it all laid out, like in the film. But any steps we take can help reduce suffering. Nobody’s perfect and very few people lead a blameless life. We should all do the best we can.
