I strongly recommend:
"The Reverse Diabetes Diet: Control Your Blood Sugar, Repair Insulin Function and Minimise Your Medication" by Dr Neal D. Barnard

Another great book on fighting diabetes - as usual from a US doctor! However, the book has obviously been written/adapted for UK readers because all the units are shown in mmol/l instead of mg/dl and this aspect makes it much more readable than many other books from the US.
Reading the book stimulated me into both dieting to lose weight and also into changing the type of foods that I eat.
In doing so I have lost 25kgs in weight.
More importantly, I have reduced my HbA1c readings from 9.4% to 6.8% then then 5.7% - and 5.5% at the last quarterly check. My doctor was quite happy and satisfied when I achieved the 6.8% however I wanted to get the number lower - and still do - however, I don't now what is achievable. I'd be interested to hear from others who have achieved even better control.
Improvements in blood pressure have been realised also - these numbers are now down to a very healthy looking average of around 105/65. Started from a very unhealthy 190/90 approximately ten years back!
Can't wait to receive my next cholesterol numbers. Total cholesterol was a healthy 4.2 last year but I am hopeful of a much lower level this year (down from around 8 ten years or so ago!). Also hoping to see improvements in HDL, LDL and TG levels. Does anyone know what levels are achievable?
All above levels are with the help of medications - metformin for diabetes, simvastatin for cholesterol and bisoprolol and rampiril for blood pressure. However, I'm expecting my doctor to be cutting at least some of these at my next medications review. However, I have found that diet is very important and saw benefits almost immediately - particularly in control of blood sugar levels.
From what I have been reading recently, it is likely that the low-saturated diet changes will also help prevent or reverse any heart disease that I might have - and reduce the risk of any recurrence of the colon cancer that I had more than 7 years ago.
I'm thinking very positively at pesent and currently reading a book called "Healthy at 100"! 🙂
