But I know that you have to be in the normal range for 6 months without meds to be considered in remission.

That's actually an old definition. The current one is to be below 48 for 3 months without diabetes meds:-

Well done that person, congrats, what a good result. As you say, it can be done!
But, as you also say, the battle continues.....
What meds are you on (if you don't mind saying)? when you next speak to your HCP, they may agree to slowly decrease them over time.
