I had my first hypo in over a week very early this morning, (that will teach me to take a picture of my Aviva Expert showing no hypos in the 7 day thingie) but anyway. I just really wanted to eat and couldn't stop in the end after I had had my jelly babies to correct the hypo I polished off half a block of cheese. But I could have eaten anything had to stop myself taking some chocolate. Does anyone else get what I call the Hypo Munchies?

Marc

Most definitely Marc, although not every time. Sometimes it can be really difficult not to overtreat, and I find it particularly difficult after a night hypo 😱

Well known phenomenon Marc. Your body is basically switching on the "eat everything in sight" alarm and whether it be sweet or savoury, it looks and smells good ! :D

It's dangerous before a main meal. Portion control can be difficult. 🙄

Rob

Tell me about it I just hate the waiting around to test again after 15 min. Once I got so bored I matched socks, sometimes when I have to get up early for work I do over eat so I can get back to bed. Any sickes at my work due to diabetes are now considered as we have gone to the Bradford Factor Sickness scheme no mitigating circumstances.

If you have the small 150ml cans of coke by the bed, it removes the temptation. One of those is enough to bring you back up (normally) and you really don't want more than one. 🙂

Also got a small pot of jelly babies but they're only for minor emergencies.

You cant help yourself its part of servival in your head ! This stuff about taking so many grams doesnt enter my head during a bad hypo.

That's one reason why it's so important to have as quick acting a treatment as poss. If you have slow release food, you just want to keep eatign until it finally comes up.

With coke, lucozade or similar, it doesn't give you so much time to raid the larder. And SIT STILL once you've eaten/drunk your treatment and DON'T go running to the cupboard for more !!!! 🙄 :D

Takes a lot of trust but you will come up after a few minutes (I speak as a reformed muncher).😱

Rob

Yup - I know those munchies too well.
Strangely I often find myself craving something I normally wouldn't be bothered about - the last one left me craving blue cheese!

I know everyone is different but if you asked me to eat a mars bar i would be physical sick, and can really taste the difference between "full fat" & diet coke and hate the taste. I can remeber when i was in the back of an ambulence with lights going after being ill & doing a bottle of Lucazade and would fight hard not have that stuff. I hate cakes & sweet things (its the way i had to grow up) but could eat people out of house & home of sea food. Ador seafood !

It seems that seafood is about the best diet you can have, but sadly not much good at hypo time 🙄

Not sure if you're aware but when your BG hits rock bottom, your pancreas fires up the beta cells to release large amounts of glucagon, which sends your liver into glucose dump mode.

But glucagon leaves you feeling nauseous. I've had the glucagon injection once, many years ago, and it left me feeling ill for 2 days. Previously I'd had bad hypos which had left me the same.

I've read that long term T1s lose their glucagon response but I'm not sure what the day to day implications of that are.

Rob

Yep, until DAFNE(well, STILE in my area) I used to eat and eat and eat!
Once had a whole easter egg and the choc bars with it, then I craved savoury and got my mum to make 2 rounds of toast, then another 2 and then another 2!!
Woke up that morning in the high 20's not suprisingly!

Night hypos deffo seem worse than day.

I do now trust the recommended amounts of lucazade although I buy the squash version than the fizzy which is nicer to drink during the night...

Wow Rob, never heard of the dimishing glucagon response. Would it be that the body stops releasing the glucose? god that's frightening...I'd be scared to go to sleep!!

Strangely, no. When I get a hypo I usually feel too sick to eat. It's afterwards when I'm recovering the problem starts.

Wonder if that's the glucagon effect ?

Must look into it further and find out if I made it up ! 🙄

Hiya,

Nathan can get bad hypo munchie's, once to the point he made himself sick, and he can go for very strange things to eat, as mentioned in another post, it does'nt matter if its sweet, savory or a combination.

I have caught Nathan buttering a piece of kitchen roll, thinking it was bread,😱

Heidi
xx🙂

At least it would be a low carb snack(!) but not what he'd need in a hypo!!!

You mean "see food, eat it"? 😉

Yep, that joke went thru my head while reading it too....cheesy or what!!!

just had a hypo munchie😱 One part of brain said have Lucozade...the other said eat three mini crunchy bars.....no prizes for guessing which one won

I'm a bad hypo muncher, especially with the little packets of animal biscuits! I've had to take them all out of my room leaving glucotabs/glucojuice and my jelly beans to remove all temptation 😛

Was forever always over cooking the lucozade bottles. Although did once get this full on crazy spell of trying to make a banana and chocolate pizza 😱 before in the end nibbling through the banana's and eventually having a very messy kitchen to clean up afterwards when back somewhat sane again.
