You can buy Ketostix over the counter at the pharmacy if you want to be safe and test him if she hasn't given you any, but you have every right to push for them to be prescribed with that HbA1c reading.
Have been to all 3 pharmacies in our small town, no one has them. All asked why I wanted them, when I replied that my OH's BG level was in the mid twenties not one of them seemed concerned and only one offered to order them in. Am ringing his surgery to see if we can get them on prescription, but I bet we will have to make an appointment with doctor. Surprised nobody seemed concerned.

You can buy Ketostix from Amazon.

Update on OH
OH diagnosed in July T2 with HbcA1 of 171
He had check up with DN last Monday, finger prick down to 17 which she was happy with. We asked if c peptide was included in original blood test, she said no as Type 1 was a younger persons illness. He is 70. We said that there had been quite a lot of older people retested and found to be Type 1 and as he had all classic symptoms, rapid weight loss, thirst, tiredness and frequent urination we were concerned. She said he was doing OK at the moment, but would look into it if things changed. She also gave him a BG monitor but he can only use 3 strips a week. o_Oo_O Ha Ha, as if that will happen.
He has another appointment for September for HbcA1, feet check and pneumonia jab.
On Tuesday he had a cataract op that had been postponed in March. He informed the hospital that he had been diagnosed with diabetes in the meantime, which funnily enough was to his advantage because they made it earlier in the day 7.45. (We were a little apprehensive that they wouldn't do it if his BG still high, but it was 14 so they went ahead. Everything went ok and he was only there 1 1/2 hrs.
Again thank you to all you lovely people for your thoughts and advise.

Thanks for the update. Glad that he was able to get op done. It is good that they have given you a test kit but three strips a week us going to tell you very little. It would be worth looking to do more.

I am sadly not surprised to hear of the Practice nurse not recognising that T1 can occur at any age. If OH continues to lose weight and his levels remain out of range I would push for c-peptide test.
