Hello All, I thought I’d finally post as feel I have something to say after being diagnosed as Type 2 following a second blood test with a HBA1C of 50 at the end of April 25 (Initial HBA1C of 51 on 19 March 25) routine blood test and no symptoms, I’m 61 and already take a daily blood pressure tablet and have had an under active thyroid for over 30 years which is managed by medication, I am a little overweight but not I would say obese and I am fully mobile.

The Diabetic nurse had wanted to prescribe Metformin and a Statin Tablet (cholesterol 4.5) straight away, I politely refused and said I wanted to try and regulate by diet as had been reading about the benefits of a lower carb diet.

Thank God I found this Forum and registered in April as I felt lost, overwhelmed and totally alone in my diagnosis.

I have read and followed so many posts, from Newbies to all you Wise Owl long term T2’s and T1’s and felt I had found a community of folks who shared their highs lows and maintenance tips for the benefit of the wider group.

I started and continued to adapt my diet and follow the max of the 130g a day Carb Limit, downloaded the Carbs & Cals App and invested in a blood glucose meter and strips and so it began...

I donated a cupboard full of (much loved) dried pasta and rice to the local Food Bank and said a sad farewell to my beloved crisps and potatoes and drastically reduced my bread intake, instead welcoming more varied vegetables, cauliflower rice and salads whilst still enjoying homemade curry & poppadoms, spicy mince and chicken and pork chops, (not all in one sitting ).

My weekly lunches and a few glasses of Aperol Spritz still continued, but the Aperol Spritz was replaced with dry white wine or cava and pastas were replaced with tasty salads and I have to be honest an occasional chip stolen from my husbands plate.

I made an effort to do more exercise and turn the tv off and I have to say, overall I’ve enjoyed my new diet and have felt more energised also losing 12lb in the process.

So a really Big Thanks for all your “unknown support and advice” as yesterday my 3 month HBA1C test results came back as 39!

I fully understand that this is now a permanent way of eating I have to embrace, but I am also still finding little treats that work for me, a little packet of Skips and a Coke Zero at under 10 Carbs definitely works for me

Sorry for the long post, but I know how much inspiration reading other people’s journeys can provide, especially at the start when first diagnosed when you are feeling especially lost.

What a superb result @Ria Mc, congratulations on getting your BG down to a more healthy level. Such success can be a huge incentive to others.
Also its nice to know that the you have also found this website and the forum a great place for information and inspiration to achieve your success. :party: :party:
 
Well done for sticking to your guns and trying carb control first. I hope your diabetic nurse was suitably impressed, although I bet they weren't. Some are less enlightened than others! I know the suggestion is that diabetics total cholesterol should be under 4, hence the statin suggestion. But I take an alternative medication, my cholesterol is now 4.6, and my GP is fine with that.
 
That's a great result - thanks for sharing, and pleased that you found the forum helpful. Your low carb & exercise journey is similar to mine and you're right about accepting that it has to be a way of life now.
