I am recently diagnosed and have been testing for about three weeks. After about a week I posted on here (rather impatiently) that my bg levels were not reducing - around 9, sometimes 12 or 14.

Lots of you said stick with the new regime (diet, exercise, Metformin) - it's a long game.

Yesterday and today I have tested 5.9 and 5.6. Thanks for your encouragement - this forum really makes a difference.

So do walnuts and almonds it seems - for me anyway!

Stick at what you are doing and it will pay off in the long run🙂

you have got it right so stick with it. It is nice when the hard work pays off

Great news David, really pleased your hard work has paid off 🙂

David - can I ask how you got into testing so early on? I was diagnosed in April and all I get told by nurse that whatever I am doing I am doing it right! Gave up chocolate and lost more than a stone - walking lots and trying to eat healthily - but no mention of testing. Went to last appt geared up to ask after reading these message boards but chickened out when it was hinted to just carry on the way I am (the unspoken message there seemed to be "don't even go there!)

I think a lot of it is down to the health authority's policy. I was given a meter two years ago but was told by my (v. nice) DN that the neighbouring authority wouldn't have done that...

hello Dorset

Sounds like I have been lucky. The nurse gave me the meter and some strips on my first visit - enough to test about twice a day. I recently asked for more which she prescribed - she said they don't mind giving more when you are in the early stages and trying to work out what is what.

I was going to buy a meter so was pleasantly surprised when it was provided.

It strikes me that if it is the bg readings that lead to the diagnosis, then you need to keep taking readings to know whether you are getting it under control.

I only have a little knowledge - but knowing what I do I think you should put some pressure on the surgery - especially as you are trying so hard. My nurse said they don't mind investing now - because if everyone tries hard at this stage, we all save in the long run - in one way or another.

Best wishes to you, David

Your nurse has it exactly right David - just the right approach, if only they all had this common sense approach!
