So I decided to test my tolerance of beer tonight. Went out armed with my meter and had a pint of Doom Bar. 1 hour later I was at 11.1 😱 - guess that'll be my last beer :(
 
Not necessarily - just persevere and try other beers! Don't give up so easily - you'll never last if you do! LOL
 
I find that I tolerate cider and lager much better than real ale, so usually Stella for me 🙂 What was your level prior to the drink?

I find that too. Unfortunately it's ales I prefer. Fortunately I am on insulin 😛 (though you DO have to be very careful mixing insulin and alcohol!)

Well in any case, you can always assign it to the 'once in a while' category. You can have anything you like once in a while - regardless of impact on BGs and it will help keep you sane and not cause any problems. As long as your 'once in a whiles' don't start getting really close together of course!

You just choose to have things, or choose not to have them. Always your choice. At least that's the best way I have found to look at it. If I start thinking I "can't", I begin to resent it very quickly.
 
As Northerner points out though, what was your reading BEFORE you drank the beer.

A post-consumption reading doesn't actually mean anything without a pre-consumption one. For instance, if you'd started drinking your beer when your BG was at 11.5 and after, it was 11.1, I would say that's pretty good in terms of overall impact! But an 11.1 in isolation doesn't mean anything.
 
I like my real ales too, but haven't tried anything since being diagnosed. Actually that's made me think. I now know that I've been diabetic for at least 7 months and in that time was completely oblivious to it & eat & drank what I wanted! God knows what damage has been done:(
 
7 to 11 isn't a massive spike - what was it like after 2 hours?

I'm just thinking, if you started out at 4, you'd have only gone up to 8 after 1 hour, which seems perfectly acceptable to me. The two-hour result is also quite important.

I deduce from this, Watson, that further research on this subject must be undertaken by you.

This is not because you enjoy drinking the stuff - oh no - don't ever think that ! - cos we all know - it is purely in the interest of medical science, isn't it?
 
Yes further investigation required. I recommend Taylor's Landlord if you can get it. I usually have it if we have a meal out. Looking forward to a pint this weekend.
 
Working on the assumption that stronger = better (more sugar turned to alcohol) I'm going to give this one a go - http://www.beersofeurope.co.uk/robinsons-old-tom - had it at a beer festival last year and it's lovely, though not exactly a session beer 😉

I've seen the Taylor's Landlord out and about occasionally, think Wetherspoon's often stock it. Not a bad beer. Before the D probably would have chosen something else, but beggars can't be choosers...
 
Great news. Went out last night and tried a pint of Adnams Broadside. BG didn't seem affected after an hour and a half (had a couple of rum and diet cokes in the mean time). So I had another couple. When I got home later and tested again, my BG had actually come down. Result :D

We are all different so our systems tolerate different things and as it is a treat , not something you do on a regular basis, there is no reason why you shouldn't do without beer. My treats are cream doughnuts and chocolate and have regular treats because I'd go quite mad (well madder than normal) without them....
 
Guiness seems to be pretty good for me - any lager, especially pilsner, sends my BG to the moon. I have found doombar to be quite tempremental too, which is a shame as it is a dependable ale when in unfamiliar territory. Either way, now I am on this LCHF diet, my last beer was three weeks ago. :(
 
I tend to be ok on things like Whisky or vodka as long as i stick with sugar free pop.
No idea about beer or cider i miss those not had them since i was diagnosed.
