Hello guys and gals .. I really am at my wits end about my weight ..and I'm considering taking steriods by any means possible .. Because the doctors just don't seam to be doing anything .... Can anyone tell me what they do to the body or if they are dangerous ?

GPs won't really have the training to identify the problems that some people have with their metabolism or in fact any biochemistry in the body.

I'd suggest seeking out a reputable Nutritional Therapist, one who has done the degree and is a member of the British Association of Applied Nutrition & Nutritional Therapy.

My friend and I both see the same Nutritional Therapist but for different things, I'm overweight and she's underweight. Weird world eh? We have both benefited from seeing a Nutritional Therapist.

You might have to start studying Biochemistry (not really) but it's interesting to see how many chemical reactions occur in the body (550 actually) and it only needs one of those reactions not to work properly and who knows . . . .

Hi Darren,

I do sympathise with your concerns about being underweight, but in the nicest possible way - don't be daft! Steroids are dangerous unless prescribed by a doctor and monitored. If I were you I would go to the GP and insist on a referral to a qualified nutritionist. Have you had your thyroid levels checked? Overactive thyroid is quite common and leads to weight loss, but is easily treated with a daily tablet.

Agree steroids will be dangerous with your diabetes Darren - your blood sugars will soar into double figures very quickly and it takes some insulin to get on top of - possibly counterproductive also if your trying to gain weight if your sugars are high. It's been incredibly difficult to manage when my little one has been on them for just short periods.

Hi Darren, please believe me when i say steroids will not help you, most weight gained from steroids come from water retention and when you stop using them most of the weight goes too. With steroids you also need to train to get muscle and eat like a horse, they are also very liver toxic especially oral meds, when you finish a course of steroids you have to do pct to keep any gains this means taking different drugs again to kick in natural testosterone production something which stops with injecting or taking oral artificial testosterone, other side affects are severe acne, baldness, mood swings, liver disease kidney disease and heart enlargement, they are not a quick fix. I have known lots of people who have taken steroids and about 50% of them are dead, and some of the living have had various forms of cancer which i believe is the result of steroid abuse, save your money and eat and train well and you will put on muscle its not quick and its not easy but believe me its better than going on the gear.

Glad you have posted mate!

Been worried about you!....as everyone has said stay away from steroids!.....not good! and I assume you would be buying them of the net?.....even WORSE!!!

Take care of yourself and seek proper help! 🙂

Darren, we understand you're having a terrible time of it, but honestly, steroids are not the answer. As you can see from other posts, the problems they'd cause are not worth any dubious and clearly fleeting gain you might make.

The best advice I can offer you is to go back to your surgery and demand a second opinion. If you really cannot face them alone, get help from someone like PALs. If you explain your situation and problems to them and ask their support when you go for the appointment, they can ensure that you are listened to and taken seriously. Another thing to consider is changing surgery, is there one nearby that you can go to instead, one that provides a better standard of care?

Some interesting comments ,thankyou guys .would it be possible to get any kind of steriods from my GP that would not be bad for me but will help with weight gain . As they give me fortisips now but they don't seam to work either

I don't think so Darren, it wouldn't matter where you got them, the side effects are the same as would be the transient benefits. Steroids really won't do the job and the price would be far too high.

No, I doubt it, prescribing guidelines are not usually for this purpose because of the risks and careful monitoring needed. To gain weight you need to rule out any conditions which make you lose weight such as hyperthyroidism or coeliac disease, as well as conditions which affect appetite such as depression/stress/anxiety. After that it's keeping your blood sugars as best you can in normal range -( high blood sugars can contribute to weight loss) and eating more calories than you burn off each day which a dietitian can help you with. Alongside your fortisips try high calorie foods such as butters and creams with your meals/desserts. 🙂

Do you go to the gym? The doctor can arrange this for you and they would help you to build strength and muscle. Where I went they gave me a personal trainer and I did not have to pay. I have put on a little weight although it does not show much as the physio says it is muscle. I certainly feel better for being stronger. As others have said try eating more weight gaining food. Steroids are certainly not the answer. Glad you are still keeping in touch. You will get there when you find the right path 🙂

Had steroids on prescription, never requested a repeat ehen they ran out. BS went through the roof, then your not only fighting why the steroids were given one, but found it impossible to get levels down.

The dr is c**p .. That's why I want to resort to this !

Darren.....steroids are not the answer! you must have other doctors in your surgery? book an appointment with a different doctor? or even your dn?

Darren,
Read through this article and it will show you that taking anabolic steroids is not the answer.

Some people believe that taking anabolic steroids will help them become fit and healthy. This isn't true. Taking anabolic steroids is a dangerous drug habit.

Side effects of anabolic steroids

Regularly taking anabolic steroids causes a range of male features, not just increased muscle mass. It can also lead to potentially dangerous medical conditions, such as high blood pressure (hypertension) or heart attacks.
Physical effects

Effects of anabolic steroids in men include:
reduced sperm count
infertility
shrunken testicles
baldness
breast development
increased risk of developing prostate cancer
splayed teeth and overgrowth of the forehead (giving an 'incredible hulk' appearance)
severe acne
