Just looking at organising insurance on a second car. Insurance company I'm with don't know my status - been with them for years and didn't advise them, when diagnosed.

Being T2 and 'only' on Meformin, have never advised DVLA. However, on form for possible alternative insurance company today, it asks the question.

Do I have to put down T2 / Metformin, to INSURANCE company, rather than DVLA ?

Unsure on this point. Sorry if it's been asked / answered before - have looked, but didn't find reference to it on here....

Thanks !

Consider this: Insurance companies would do just about anything to get out of paying a claim. If it's a straight 'Do you have Diabetes' and you say No, they can say you lied on your application and refuse to pay. If it's a ticky box thing with only Yes and No as options, I would write a narrative answer on the form. Hard to do if it's an online form, so I'd go to a broker (usually not much more expensive).

No diabetes treated by Metformin does not have to be notified to the DVLA - only medication that might induce a Hypo. Always a good idea to let your insurer know of anything pertinent to driving - they are not allowed to discriminate and increase your premium.

I was on metformin prior to being ' promoted ! ' to insulin. On both accounts I informed my insurance company @ the time who said , ' as long as it was on record my doctor had given me permission to drive I was ok '
Perhaps you should do the same. I must point out however , if you've ever been hospitalised from a hypo @ anytime it could throw a different complexion on things.
Hope this helps.

No it wouldn't, how would they find that out, as long as your doctor said it WAS OK to do it. And no sane doctor would say that (these days) after the second one inside 12 months, would they?

And you would normally keep the car, it's only 12 months ish as long as you don't keep doing it, so you keep the insurance in force for the F&T cover.

Why would insurers ask, and why would you volunteer that info if they didn't?

Even if you tell DVLA and they withdraw your licence if they ask Have you ever been banned? I don't think that's the same legally as Have you ever had your licence withdrawn? LOL

They never ask if you have a short period licence, or if they know you would have, whether it's 1, 2 or 3 years - even if you tell em you're on insulin.

Spose it may be different if you had an accident whilst hypo and you'd made a claim so they knew you'd done it!
