Hi everyone
I was diagnosed with type2 diabetes in September. I went to the Drs asking for a medical check up as I had lost weight and was becoming very thirsty. I was prescribed 2 metaformin per day but 4 weeks later this increased to 4 per day. I asked if I should be testing my blood but was told this wasn't necessary. Reading everyone's comments I am now of the opinion that I should be monitoring my blood.

Thank you for all your comments I am really glad I registered on this site. I am really confused about what I should and shouldn't be eating especially where carbs are concerned. I have been invited to a full day workshop at my local hospital so hopefully this will be useful.
 
Hi Denise, welcome. We strongly believe testing is a vital tool for any diabetic regardless of type. If your doctor or nurse won't prescribe a meter and strips then there is an affordable option out there called the SD Codefree that does the job very well. Also this blog by Alan Shanley should help you get the hang of the process.
 
The workshop may be very useful and it is certainly worth attending. Diet is a very personal matter as we all react differently to the food we eat. As a rule though if you're T2 then starchy foods are generally bad and should be avoided except as treats, same goes for foods high in sugar or lactose. For most of us that means cutting down on some fruits and vegetables, such as bananas and parsnips, plus potatoes, bread, rice and pasta, as well as some cereals. Only by testing will you know which foods you need to avoid and which are OK for you. As a rule you shouldn't get a rise greater than 2 points 2 hours after a meal. I.e., if you are 4.5 before you eat then, ideally you shouldn't be more than 6.5 2 hours later.
 
Thank you Alison At my last Drs appointment my blood sugar was 11 which was 2 hours after I had eaten so the nurse increased my medication. My next appointment is not until December so I don't know if my tablets are working! I think it's a good idea to buy a monitor so I can have some idea what my blood sugars are. There are a few books that have been suggested on this site which I think may also be useful. It is reassuring to hear I am not alone and other people experience the same confusion of what to and what not to eat. Thanks.
 
You're welcome. The reading list may seem a bit daunting but persevere and you will find it helps a great deal. And, don't be afraid to ask questions, the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked.

Welcome to the forum Denise. Testing is a good way forward as that way you can identify which foods effect you and in what way.
 
Welcome from another type 2, Denise. I second what others have said about testing, as it is the only way you'll find out what effect different foods have on you, and then you can adjust accordingly. It will take time, but with testing, adjusting your diet (or meal plan, as it's sometimes called! 🙄 ), and exercise as necessary, then you'll be able to take charge of the condition. I use the Codefree meter mentioned upthread, and it's dead simple!

Thank you everyone. I have ordered a code free meter, should be here any day so hopefully will help. Does anyone have any suggestions on which fruits to avoid because I keep getting conflicting information. Are all fruits ok just in moderationq?
 
I have heard that 'northern ' fruits are supposed to be 'better' ie apples and pears and plums rather than oranges and bananas and pineapples. By better, I understand it to mean they act slower on bloodsugars or have less sugar in them. Dont know how true that is?

Possibly the more sun a fruit gets, the more sugar it contains. Our garden fruit is definitely sweeter after a good summer. Though melon is supposed to be good, I assume there's so much water in them, the sugar is more diluted and you consume less of it in an average portion.
 
I find it is not always certain fruits, it can also depend on the portion size.
