Hi all, I'm new around here. I was diagnosed T1 at the end of May and I'm currently on a fixed insulin dose regime. Novorapid 8,8,6. Plus 20 units of Lantus at night.

I am travelling - for the first time since December 2019 - on Saturday and will be having a very early start. I usually eat my breakfast at around 0930, but as I have to get up at 4am, I will either need a snack to tide me over until then, or a snack at some point during the longer day to bridge the gap between meals.

Is there anything I can eat that I don't need insulin for? I was thinking something like a lump of cheese, or a boiled egg, but didn't know if the protein would cause a spike at some point.

Lump of cheese or boiled eggs should be fine, it's what I'd snack on without insulin when I was trying to gain weight, the protein may have a small effect on your levels but it shouldn't be too disastrous if it does although if it were me I'd probably just eat breakfast early and not bother snacking xx

So when @clarita84 will be getting up tomorrow is approx when her bedtime Lantus will be most active, plus about 30-60 mins past the time when the body's BG is at its lowest - hence eating brekkie and having the 8u of Novo with it, sounds like a very bad combination to me, potentially inducing hypo city. Therefore I pronounce that a very bad solution. (Yes I could handle it and I daresay so could you @Kaylz - but Clarita has nowhere anywhere near either of our experience, she doesn't even know how to match Novo to carbs as yet so we need to be very aware of that right now.)

So YES - do have a lump of cheese/ a hardboiled eg - but if your BG is under approx 7 when you get up - have a cracker or 2 buttered if you want!) with the cheese or egg and then play it by ear - but scream for help if you get stuck.

And - test test test !

Good luck on your travels @clarita84

You might find that the early start, and excitement and hefting luggage around create some BG fluctuation of their own… in either direction!

So do make sure you take snacks and hypo treatments, just in case!
