I have been suffering with swollen hands and feet for a couple of days now and I have no idea what is causing it but they are really quite swollen.

There have been some changes to my lifestyle as I have started a diet and also gone back to the gym which has meant I have had quite a few hypos over the last few days but don't think that this would be linked to swelling?

Anyone have any ideas? Have requested a call back from the doctor but probably won't be until tomorrow now

Doctors reception have told me they have no slots available for call backs and I have to call again tomorrow

Commonest cause of swollen hands and feet is exercise, (in the absence of certain medical conditions) so I guess it’s the gym work. It would be a bit of a coincidence if it weren’t. That can change in women depending on the hormonal cycle, when fluid retention in tissues can vary considerably.

Don’t worry.🙂

Yeah could be hormonal. My mum used to get swelling at certain parts of her cycle.

Thanks both, they have gone down again overnight but seems to be the same pattern again today

Not sure about hormonal, I have had any sign of a cycle for a couple of months now!!

Have you had any higher than usual blood sugars recently? It might just be a simple thing like that, that can set things off a bit.

Hi @Amity Island if anything they have been lower than usual.. can that set it off? I thought it was just high.

Got an appointment with the nurse at 3.45pm as they are all swollen again this afternoon so will see what they think too

When I was exercising intensely (three hours training three days a week) I found I had puffy legs, also when out walking for a day I get swollen hands but they soon go down. It is just fluid collecting in excess in the wrong places.

If you are on any tablets for BP, there is one of them that leads to swollen legs and feet. I am sorry but I can’t remember which one it is now, but I do remember refusing to try it for that reason. There were plenty of other options and I did not want to deal with that along with T1 if I could avoid it.

I’ve been doing just over an hour 3-4 times a week but before this last week basically nothing so it is a big change and I could see how this might do it. I’ve been to personal trainers before and I used to be a dancer but have never suffered with swelling.

The other thing is it’s happened 3 days in a row now but I’ve only been to the gym on one of those evenings.

Waiting at the doctors now so will see if the nurse has much to say! Suppose it might just be ‘one of those things’

Let us know either way cx

Ended up seeing a doctor who checked me over thoroughly which was reassuring. She seems to think it’s an allergic reaction of some sort and has suggested antihistamines to see if that improves it. She’s said to keep a close eye on swelling and also blood sugars which obviously I do anyway.

If there’s no improvement next week I’m to go back for some blood tests.

Take care Emma, my ankles swell up when I go walking it usually lasts for a few days. Doc says its excess fluid collecting at your extremities especially while your exercising, nothing much to worry about unless you feel really uncomfortable with it, usually goes away eventually. Hope you can continue with your exercises without too many problems.🙂

Glad you’ve been checked over and they said about more testing if it doesn’t settle.
I had a rash with a cold a few years ago and I was told it was just reaction to the virus itself and to take antihistamines. It did the job, but I’d never had it before or since.

Take care

So.... my feet and hands continue to swell despite taking piriton which doesn't seem to be making any difference. Yesterday evening my ankles were so swollen i struggled to walk to the car after work. I stopped the gym for the last week or so to rule that out.

In addition to this i've also been throwing on weight like nobody's business - 4kg this week alone!! I have been trying to eat healthy and certainly not eating more than I usually would.

Also don't know if it's related but no time of the month since 3rd December (i'm usually really regular).

Really have no clue what's going on :confused:

Might be an idea to get your thyroid function tested. Irregular periods and weight gain are flags for an under active thyroid.

So that’ll be two of us looking bewildered if it comes back normal:D

Apparently my previous test last May was 'borderline'. To be honest I'd be relieved to finally know whats causing it all

In that case, it makes it more likely that treatment would fix your problems. Borderline means low, but not at the level that treatment is currently advised. Symptoms mean treatment should at least be tried.

That is a standard thing with swelling in the lower limbs, as far as I know. Were you told to raise your feet if possible? Is there any change in colour? Or tempreature of the affected areas? I expect the doctor would have looked for that sort of thing though.
