Swollen ankles

Newly T2 couple months ago diet control at mo until next hba1c in January previously 48 both t8mes for confirmation. This past 10 days or so have had proper swollen ankles sore feet and red patches on legs,also plantar fasciitis which is mildly improved. Been to see a gp and paramedic and they’re not worried but I am! It’s not right , am on a diuretic and a bp tablet and atorvastatin which I started 3 months ago just the statin test been on for years ,swelling goes down overnight which is good but soon as I sit for breakfast etc it starts to swell, does anyone think this is diabetic related or stain related? Will have to bang on to gp again tomorrow I think. I do walk lots and on feet lots but have started resting and icing them only temp relief

Also forgot to add that I’ve been to podiatry this week and had Doppler and pulse check all good flow
 
Sorry to hear about the swelling in your ankles @Booroo

But good to hear your pulses are in good shape.

Swollen ankles and fluid retention aren’t effects I commonly see people talking about with statins.

Have you checked the patient information leaflet or NHS website for the tablets you are taking? They usually have common side effects listed
 
@Booroo welcome to the forum. I've been on perindipol for more than a decade plus a diuretic. I was taken off the diuretic in September when I started an SGLT2 which had diuretic effects. I got atarvastatin two weeks later. Not yet had a reviewv but my blood pressure has been awful. End of November when I went to a walk in centre with a septic finger it was 198 over 103. At my diabetic review on 10th I was referred to duty Doctor and am back on original diuretic but still taking SGLT2. Due to see an HCP about latest results. I have aches and pains in hips and legs and intermittently on other parts of body. Cannot decide if it's age, need new mattress or the statin. I was diagnosed as type 2 end of July 64.
My latest Hba1c was 44.
Fluid retention can be an effect of BP. I am temporarily on an extra diuretic and been told to monitor my BP. My BP is back under control. Top reading 120.

Perindopril is an ACE Inhibitor which are the BP medications of choice for diabetics. However, going through the PIL (Patient Information Leaflet) a serious side effect is swollen ankles (which may be a sign of kidney problems). Also in some cases diuretics can have an adverse effect on the kidneys- I was on Furosemide for a period a year ago and my kidney function (eGFR) halved but recovered a few months after they were stopped. Statins are not known to cause swollen ankles although Dr Google will give you very side effect up to growing a second head! :rofl: You need to chase your GP hard tomorrow. It is also worth talking to your pharmacist as often they know more about the drugs than the GP!
 
As above it’s more likely to be BP meds related. Whilst you wait to see the GP elevate your legs as much as possible. Not just putting your feet up on a stool but having them above your heart preferably. I spend a lot of time (for other reasons) lying on my bed with my legs raised on pillows and my swollen ankles haven’t been an issue since. It’s amazing how painful swollen ankles can be.
 
All my bloods were fine, also don’t know if it’s the hrt as changed type and dose within last month says foot and ankle swelling on that aswell!and I do home reads for bp as get white coat syndrome and all is ok there it really is a mystery
Goes down overnight and then when sat for breakfast it starts left foot is more so than right
Also have anxiety

Sometimes you can have been on a medication for a long time and it can suddenly cause a side effect. I had been on Amlodipine for years and started to get swollen ankles and the GP changed it to something else which has been fine.
 
Yes I’ve been this morning and have adjusted hrt and then will revisit changing diuretic to a different one,I think we expect side effects at the outset but maybe not? I appreciate everyone responses thank you

This is terrible. I felt like that for five years till a couple of months ago went into hospital for a UTI and a super registrar checked my medication and said "why are you on statins." I don't know because I was given them by the hospital when diagnosed as T2 following a suspected heart attack.
She advised to come off them ( I threw them away) and the change in my overall well being can only be described as a miracle.
No more brain fog, aching muscles, joint pain.
Just saying.
 
I am very sensitive to BP meds (they do dreadful things to my electrolytes), so am on a tiny dose of 2 medications.

Recently, I have been experiencing hair thinning, which is sort of baffling my GP (all relevant tests are decent). During the investigation process, she quipped that if only I'd had swollen ankles she'd be switching out meds immediately.

Whilst it is less usual to develop side effects after a period without, it can happen.
 
Changed hrt and have bloods with crp in January hopefully will get it sorted the pain as you all say truly is something else!
