Hello,
I enjoy sweets like mint humbug, pearl drops, buttermilk, strawberries and cream etc.

I know too many can be like a laxative, but they don't spike my BG.
Does nyone else have these or any other type of sugar free sweets.
 
If we go away my wife always buys some sugar-free sweets for the car, usually Werther's Original or Strawberries & Cream flavours in those matchbox size packs. That's the only time I eat such a thing, and even then in moderation as sugar-free doesn't mean carb-free. The Werther's Original ones are 87% carbohydrate, the Strawberries & Cream 89%, which means that one pack has as many carbs as a whole meal and for no nutritional value.
 
When I was first diagnosed I used these sugar free boiled sweets that come in little boxes like Sula and supermarket own brand. They tided me over for a while but I am pretty sure it was largely a habit needing to suck on something sweet particularly whilst I was driving and after a few months I stopped buying them and didn't miss them. I have an occasional square of 70% dark chocolate with a spoon of peanut butter if I want something sweet but not every day and I usually break each square into 4 pieces and eat each piece slowly so that I really appreciate it, whereas before diagnosis, I just guzzled chocolate and started another bar when I had eaten the first. It was almost compulsion to eat them rather than enjoying and savouring them, so now I only have a little dark chocolate which is more satisfying and I take my time to enjoy it.
 
I use them when I have an irritating cough, but remove when the tickle in the throat has eased, very effective for that but too many definitely has a laxative effect!
 
I have tried chocolate but the 95% stuff, very hard to eat too much, but that's a good idea I guess
 
If you read the packets they generally give a suggested number, stick to that number or less. A few are fine for most people, but speaking from experience unless you only have 1 or 2 a day I wouldn't even bother.

I know a story of a friends mum with T2, my friend bought her diabetic chocolate as a gift (this was about 17/18 years ago), the Boots version, for Christmas, she ate half a box and spent boxing day on the loo.
I have had this "gift" off others too, but if you can't eat anymore than the actual stuff without fear it is not worth it.
 
I agree too many sweets and too much of the artifical sweeteners is not good for you.

I don't eat a lot, about 7 or 8 for the day, which work fine for me as I have a sugar rush and want to keep off cakes, biscuits and all the other goodies at home!
