I am told everywhere that I should avoid such things as low calorie fizzy drinks. I know that they are not good for you, but do they have an effect on your blood sugar levels? I am 5 days into eating low carb, and think it would be easier if I could have the odd glass of cloudy lemonade to cheer things up a bit.

Hi @CarolA
Well done on your first 56 days. I hope you are starting to see improvements soon.
Are you testing your blood sugars? I ask because we all behave differently and tolerate different things. Some people find they can tolerate diet sodas and some find they can't.
What you want to know is can you? So the best thing to do is to test before drinking some cloudy lemonade and then 2 hours later.

Ah, thank you. No, I don’t test yet. My GP says testing is for type 1 and it is not valuable for type 2. Reading this website, I am beginning to doubt he is right.

Low Calorie (diet) drinks should be fine but don't go silly. I started off diluting them half and half with water because I don't think it is good to drink too much of them. Now I usually just have an inch or so in the bottom of my glass and fill it up with water so it gives the water a bit of flavour and sweetness but I am not consuming something which is overly sweet (I think it is important to break your craving for sweet stuff and increase your sensitivity to it by reducing sweet foods and drink in your diet as much as possible) I now have a much greater appreciation for other taste sensations like sourness and bitterness and savoury than I did before because I was so focused on wanting sweetness.

Anyway, that is what I do to limit intake of sweeteners. It also saves money because I don't drink as much diet pop as I would if I was having a full glass each time. If half and half is not enough for you to start with then 3/4 pop and a quarter water until your taste buds get used to it.

I'm afraid most people will think your GP is talking b.....ks as testing is very valuable for Type 2 to make better food choices and be in control of their condition.
It would be like driving your car with a blindfold on or without a speedometer to tell you if you are over the limit.

Depends on how many gallons of them you intend to consume! Personally I don't drink more than about 300ml of anything very often, so don't regard the amount of artificial sweetener in 'Diet' pop to be a hazard to my health. And what on earth would I dilute gin with if not low cal tonic?

These days the level of sweetener in drinks or foods is far too high for me. I do have some squash, but not very often - I use it to flavour gelatine when making jelly with berries in for desserts.

Been drinking sugar fee pop for last 40 years, can't say it's done any harm in that time, nice & refreshing at anytime especially warm days.
