I’m having a bit of a quandary about certain sweeteners. Basically I was told that sugar free drinks are perfectly safe to drink by my diabetes nurse but my neighbour is obsessed with how bad sweeteners are for you, even saying that I’d be better off drinking normal sugary drinks.

Is there any truth to this or is this just outdated thinking from someone who I’m sure means well but doesn’t know as much as they think they do.

Sweeteners are another hot topic. Some people are sensitive to some sweeteners and some find that some leave an unpleasant after taste. There are some which if used in quantity can cause digestive upset. Many people tolerate diet drinks OK and 'sugary drinks' are not a good idea if Type 2 diabetic.
Using the right one for the situation is important as some are more suitable than others.

I would try to consume less diet drinks and more water because I think too much artificial sweetener is not good for us either. I buy diet drinks like cola and "flavoured water" and then I semi dilute them so that I am having half a glass of water and half of cola. In fact I now tend to have a quarter glass of cola and the rest water and that is enough for it still to be enjoyable and I have at least halved my consumption in the process.

That’s actually similar to what I do, makes them last longer. I think it was just the lecture i got for drinking a can of sugar free tango. She was saying there was too much saccharine (which wasn’t even on the ingredients list) and I probably caused my diabetes by drinking stuff like that.

I find that certain drinks do mess with my gut but usually no problems. I think I just don’t like being told that I’m poisoning myself by having a can of pop!

When I have fizzy drinks, I find that it causes a bit of constipation...apologies

Some of them have the…opposite effect for me. The worst one was a bottle of Dr Pepper zero. I think our toilet should have been fitted with a seatbelt! Worse than the “moviprep” I had to take before a colonoscopy!
