hi can anyone tell me that if your diabeteic some times you can give off a sweet smell ,or is this an old wives tale, could some one put me right thanks:(

Ketones make your breath smell of pear drops. Have you got a high reading?

only time i smelled sweet was when i had the beginnings of dka

I think it only applies to people with type 1 when they have high levels of ketones due to a lack of insulin. Ketones are toxic and the body tries to rid itself of them in the urine and via the lungs, so the breath can smell of acetone. Also, people with high glucose levels will expel glucose in their urine, so it tastes sweet (doctors in ancient times used to taste a sample!).

Rosie, are you feeling OK? Do you have a meter so you can test your BG when this happens?
