Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi guys, I’m new here but have had diabetes for about 8 years, type 2 insulin dependent an I know very little only that I want to loose weight but hate the food options, I eat sweets most days, bread, Pepsi max and sweetened cappuccino. My meals are normally small but I’ve still put on quite a few stone since been diagnosed,

Hi @Leats and welcome to the forum, I was diagnosed on May 30th as type2 but I am managing mine (fingers crossed) with exercise and diet, and feel unable to offer suggestions as you are insulin dependent, I'm sure someone will be along soon who can help

Hi @Leats and welcome from me also 🙂 If you are unable to cut out the sweets and sweetened cappuccino, maybe try to reduce the amount you are having per day maybe? I'm very fortunate that I don't have a massively sweet tooth. Carbs like bread, rice and spuds were my big downfall, and having cut those down significantly means I no longer crave them. Carbs seem to feed on carbs, they are really addictive!

I don't know what affect cutting down the sweet stuff would mean for your insulin. I assume you would adjust accordingly, but I'll let one of the good people here who know more about it answer that one!

Personally I find browsing through this forum regularly also helps to keep my cravings down. There is so much camaraderie, good humour and wisdom here that I really find it helps.

Thank u for taking the time to reply, keep up the good work with what ur doing

Which insulin are you using?

I was a sugar addict and sweet junkie as well as loving bread and tatties pre-diagnosis. I cut the sweets and sugar from my diet the day the day I suspected I had diabetes and then whittled the other starchy carbs down over the following few weeks after diagnosis but that was before I was started on insulin.
I love the fact that following a low carb diet has stopped me from suffering those cravings for sweet stuff now. I adjust my insulin to suit what I eat but if you are on fixed doses of mixed insulin then you may not be able to do that.

If you want to lose weight cutting those high sugar carbs would be the first place to start. They are not doing you any favours. I am not saying that it was easy to stop, but I am so pleased I did as I am fitter and healthier and feel better mentally without them and I taste food differently now and I find sweetness in things which were previously sour and quite enjoy sour, bitter and savoury flavours so much more as a result of kicking my sugar and high carb habit.

Hi Leats, welcome to the forum.

It's tricky when you enjoy sweet things and have a diabetes diagnosis so I understand your frustrations.

It might be useful make a food diary for a week and then see what you can swap out such as a seeded bread and an alternative sweetener? You could also make a list of things that are healthier that you like and incorporate them into your meals.

There may be a reason why making some changes are more tricky for you and you're welcome to send me a pm or email us/ the helpline team to get some tailored support.

We've got lots of info on the site such as the link below and some great threads in the food section so do have a look around and let us know if we can help in any way.
