Hi there

Has anyone else experienced excessive sweating around the face no matter what kind of food (cold or hot)? I'very been a type 1 diabetic for nearly 18 years and for a long time now this has been happening. Kind of embarrassing especially at work

Cheers
Sio

There is a condition called 'diabetic gustatory sweating' which involves sweating just around the head and neck area after eating;

However I know people without diabetes who suffer with this and it's caused by hyperhydrosis which is more common than you'd think. It's usually more socially embarrassing than a medical problem but you could mention it to your doctor if it's causing problems.

Hi Sio, welcome to the forum 🙂 I wouldn't say I've experienced this - I've been diagnosed 8 years. I sometimes get a hypo mid-meal which can be very annoying, and usually because I've injected too early before the meal. When I was diagnosed and in hospital I had huge sweats from my levels sky-rocketing after eating - from the 5s to the high 20s 😱 - chiefly because there was no monitoring of what I was actually eating or (it seems) attempting to match my insulin to my food. But those reasons have very obvious causes, @Amigo's suggestion sound more like a possibility for you and I would definitely raise it with your GP 🙂

What insulin are you on, and how have things been for you over the years?

Hiya. I've been on DAFNE for about 6 years now so things are fairly flexible for eating which is nice. I use levemir and novorapid insulin. To be honest I didn't look after my diabetes for many years as a teenager (definitely not indestructible!) so now I'm finding things difficult due to numerous complaints. Working my butt off now to get things in shape. I'm only 28 so hoping I can reverse and damage or stabilise things as best as I can. I regularly see my GP so will mention the sweating for sure.

Also I don't know if your diabetic consultant has mentioned this to you before but they are now recommending taking fast acting insulin 5-10 mins before eating meals to allow your food and insulin to start reacting at the same time. I find this works really well actually 🙂 might be worth a go if you're still getting crazy spikes after eating

Thanks Sio 🙂 I've got it pretty well worked out on the whole with the timings - I can actually inject up to an hour before eating in the mornings, 30 minutes before lunch and about 15 minutes before evening meal. It's just the odd occasion when that 15 minutes in the evening ought to have been more like 5 minutes! 😱
