Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
There are many topics on the list when you click on general messageboard, but none specific to type of Diabetes 1, 2 or others, I wondered if it might be good, or not, to have separate thread strings for different diabetes types..
What do yo guys think...?

While I think it may be a good idea I also think that it would divide the different type's from interacting with each other so much too xx

This has come up before, and I think the general consensus was, keep it mixed. People felt they may know the answer, of have something to contribute, but be put off replying if it wasn't their particular 'specialism'
For example, I've just commented on your Tuna question, because I happen to be interested in my Omega intake. I'm type 1, so I might not even have read it if it was on a separate type 2 forum if that's where you'd posted it because you are type 2.
Also, many people don't fit neatly into the Type1/Type2 category, more may have been misdiagnosed, and it all helps with our general knowledge of each others conditions.

Sorry didn't kn

Apologies didn't know had come up before Robin, and yes you're right I would miss your input, if I was on a separate T2 site, maybe just a beginners newly diagnosed T1 & T2 page might help ?😉

No need to apologise, Martin, nobody expects everyone to have memorised the entire contents of the forum before commenting! It's good that things come up for air regularly, and there is fresh input.

I'm not sure I would have put the general q about Tuna in a specific T1, T2 or other thread if there was one, it would have went into general..!

I understand where you're coming from with this but there's probably not enough people contributing to warrant separate 'type' forums. We all have our type shown to know whether it's specific or not once in the thread. Personally I find talking about diabetes is about a shared experience but do probably find more affinity with people who've been through the same things. So I find type, age at diagnosis and length of diagnosis for me all strike a shared chord. That's not to say I ignore everyone else otherwise I'd probably be a bit lonely sat here on my own. 😉

The mixed nature of this forum makes it vastly better than the orange one, in my opinion. I sometimes lurk there (sorry, Northerner!) but have never joined, and the more they bombard me with flags pushing me to join, the more I will resist!

To get to the point, I was horrified to read a thread there a while back, where a T2 poster had the temerity to post on a T1 thread, and was roundly castigated. The tone of some of the T1 replies was really nasty.

The only thread here that might be better split in two is the "What Did You Eat?" We sometimes advise Newbies to restrict carbs, tell them to look at the thread for ideas, but rarely with the caution that T1s (and T2s on insulin) can choose to eat more carbs than D & E or Metformin-treated T2s.

I know the orange one of which you speak, and while I think it has plenty of great advice I prefer this one...

I've been here for 3 years, and I didn't know it had come up.

Do you mean, in this list of sections, having a section for T1 and another for T2 .
I never look in any of these sections. I click on *New Posts* in the (websites) sub menu bar. I then see one list of all threads with new posts in (this includes new threads). So posts from a T1 and T2 sections would all be mixed up anyway.

You never look in those sections..?, perhaps, you might if there were sections directly related to your type 2, moreover, new starters who been recently diagnosed with T1 or T2, might be able to directly pinpoint useful advice..Just saying..!

That’s what I do too, unless I am posting or looking for something specific. I like the fact that type 1 and 2 are equally likely to comment on almost any thread.

You're not likely to be looking for any new threads or advice on your condition tho' Radders..?

I feel that being 'Type' specific would just mean folks posts wouldn't get everyone's attention and either type can help the other out

There's always something 'new' to learn with diabetes though, even the ones here diagnosed since childhood will tell you they are still learning new things everyday x

I’m with you on this.

I am glad this site does not have type specific forums , You see without the help and support of many people who have T1 here I would have been up the river without a paddle when I went onto insulin, when I went onto basal bolus regimen I was horrified to discover I knew more than the practic nurse did about MDI and I didn’t know very much 😱.

I’m with you Lin. I really like the mixed ‘all in it together’ structure. In my early forum days I soon realised how much I could learn from people who were using food choices as their main treatment strategy. I think it also gives very useful insight into other experiences very different to your own, which builds empathy I think.

Also we are lucky that we have quite a few members who hang around for a little while, and the blended nature of the posts and the way that everyone feels ‘allowed’ to chip in to any threads means that members can share experiences that they have picked up from others. For example, if there was a thread on T1 education courses lots of T2 members here would be perfectly able to say that DAFNE seemed well thought of, or that there was an online one (that perhaps they couldn’t think of the name of etc).

Similarly, I could confidently suggest that Metformin often gives rise to stomach problems, but that the ‘slow release’ version might be a bit easier, not because I have experience of either, but just because I’ve seen it posted several times before.

Of course there is nothing like real lived experience for deep understanding, but some bits and pieces of info can’t help but spread across the ‘type’ barriers I think.
